I'm not a Geologist, and so my terminology is an attempt at speaking the lingo.

Sideways movement of the San Andreas of 9 feet since 1924 is in my layman's understanding a different dynamic than what I called a subduction.

As it was explained to me from someone who was not the Geologist, just good friends with this expert one, the Pacific plate is attempting to undercut the mainland plate of North America, with a 9 foot (rather than 9 inch) backlog of unresolved downward force.

Evidently there is some knob or geologic prominence on the land that is blocking this 9 foot plate dive backlog from releasing -all at once.

Mounting evidence points toward the release event happening soon. Fracking in the area is suspected to have played a role in accelerating it.

Strange animal behavior has historically been documented to be a major precursor of earthquakes. When the chickens of this CA Geologist recently started acting very strange (1.5 weeks ago), he became significantly more concerned.

I answered this in the edit. ALL the water on Pacific plate -extending into the Pacific ocean- will rush toward such a massive downward drop. If the plate buckles somewhere else under the ocean, I guess it parts the water sending the force in two major directions. The whole sea moves together and tends to swish back and fourth until all this incalculable energy is relieved.
