Former flight attendants sue Airbus over “bleed air”
Former flight attendants sue Airbus over “bleed air”

Posted on October 16, 2009 | By Aubrey Cohen

Two former flight attendants are suing Airbus, alleging that toxic “bleed air” from aircraft engines caused serious permanent injuries.

According to the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Broward County, Fla.:

Lucy Mayorga and Adriana Moravcik of New York suffered inhalation injuries on Oct. 8, 2005, aboard a U.S. Airways Airbus A319-112 aircraft. Upon takeoff, they noticed a strange chemical smell, followed by their eyes watering, their throats tightening and debilitating symptoms, including headache, upper respiratory irritation and difficulty breathing.

They were later diagnosed with breathing injuries, and their symptoms continued to worsen until they had to give up their jobs.

The lawsuit goes on to allege that defective design allows toxic chemicals from engine oil and hydraulic lubrication products to contaminate air drawn in to the cabin through the engines.

Toxic "bleed air" seems to have been a taboo subject in the airline industry for quite some time.

We'll be looking for TOMBSTONES: A Boeing engineer's DEADLY warning about toxic cabin air

A SENIOR engineer at aircraft giant Boeing warned bosses they would be “looking for a tombstone” unless they tackled the potentially deadly issue of toxic fumes on board passenger planes, a bombshell email reveals.

By Ted Jeory
PUBLISHED: 04:01, Sun, Apr 13, 2014

The Sunday Express has obtained a memo written by a long serving employee at the US company in which he complains he and other engineers have been given the “run around” over their fears.

The engineer was so worried about the risk to passengers on board Boeing’s planes he told bosses he was amazed air safety regulators were not taking stronger action.

He said in the email Boeing was fully aware of the issue and some of the events that had been witnessed, including blue clouds of chemical compounds circulating above passengers’ heads, were “significant”.

Lufthansa Working To Reduce A380 Cabin Fume Events

Oct 2, 2012
Jens Flottau | Aviation Daily

Lufthansa is working on initiatives to reduce cabin fume events on its fleet of Airbus A380s. The measures include alterations to the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines, procedural changes and better surveillance of cabin air quality.

The airline says it has experienced an unusual number of cabin fume events on its A380 services, particularly when outbound from Singapore. In the events, cabin crew and passengers reported unusual odors in the cabin, but the problems did not cause health problems, the airline states. Because many of the events were reported on return flights from Singapore, the airline suspects climatic conditions may play a role in the causal chain.

I'm wondering how big the payout would be if it turned out that this crash was caused by pilots succumbing to toxic fumes in the cabin of the A320, and that this problem had been ignored for years by the aircraft manufacturer, in spite of aircraft personnel bring it to the attention of the airlines that owned these planes.

What lengths do you think that Airbus might go to in order to distract crash investigators and the general public from looking into this problem?

I am sure many times bigger than the tobacco industry settlements.

That's what the airlines and manufacturers are terrified of.

When you can skim the air in at 500mph, why does the fresh air have to come via the engine area? There is something retarded about this.

one of the additives used in lubricants for gas turbine engines is tricresyl phosphate [link to en.m.wikipedia.org]
this is an organophosphorus compound.
do some research on organohosphates. they're not super friendly to us biological types whether we have two legs or more.

the risks to passengers would probably be lower, since the vast majority of them do not fly as often as airline employees do.

Should airline passengers be informed of the dangers of breathing toxic bleed air?
