Silver tarnishes, which means a high resistance oxide/sulphide forms on its surface. Silver is fine for many applications but where a very low voltage and low current is involved the tarnish can interfere with the signal and gold MUST be used instead.

It's not a matter of silver "not being ideal" as you've stated, it's just the fact that silver cannot work in certain application.
