Did you know that your gut has a brain, and it dreams?
'During sleep, the head’s brain produces 90-minute cycles of slow wave sleep, followed by periods of rapid eye movement (REM) where dreams occur. During the night, when it is empty, the gut’s brain produces 90-minute slow wave muscle contractions, followed by short bursts of rapid muscle movement. These two brains are linked even in sleep. Individuals with bowel problems have been shown to also have abnormal REM sleep'

'Embedded in the wall of the gut, the enteric nervous system (ENS) has long been known to control digestion. Now it seems it also plays an important role in our physical and mental well-being. It can work both independently of and in conjunction with the brain in your head and, although you are not conscious of your gut “thinking”, the ENS helps you sense environmental threats, and then influences your response. “A lot of the information that the gut sends to the brain affects well-being, and doesn’t even come to consciousness,” says Michael Gershon at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York.'

Well size [fat] doesn't equate to your actual intestinal tract, that's just adipose tissue that builds up around it.

Also, it's not the size of the ship it's the motion of the ocean :D

Thanks much for the stars! Also keep in mind that the microbes that make up 9/10ths of all the cells in your body are able to create neurotransmitters which directly affect your mood (ie your Head-Brain)

If there are any other self-proclaimed neurogeeks out there I'd love to branch this thread out (puns!) into other aspects of whole-body health and consciousness.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that almost every time I go to bed with a tummy ache, when I wake up, it doesn't hurt anymore. Is there healing in them there dreams?

yes. Your enteric nervous system has more nerve cells than your spinal column, according to a bit of news put out by our insurance company - one of the things they send in the mail.

that's why they call it a gut feeling!

my gut feeling is that this is coming out in the news now for some reason. I don't know what the reason is.
