Iranians dancing in the street to celebrate deal

The world powers and Iran announced on Thursday night that they had taken a “decisive step” towards a comprehensive agreement that would restrict Iran’s nuclear programme for a least a decade in exchange for lifting crippling economic sanctions. The agreement-in-principle came at the end of a marathon eight-day negotiating session in Lausanne, Switzerland led by John Kerry, the US secretary of state, and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, who at times negotiated through the night in search of a mutually acceptable compromise.

Celebrations broke out in Tehran, where people took to the streets dancing and passing out sweets. In one video posted on Facebook, a group of women can be heard clapping and chanting "Thank you, Rouhani."

Barack Obama, speaking from the White House, also cautioned that the final deal still needed to be signed, but hailed the proposed template as an “historic understanding” that could pave the way to a new understanding with Iran.
