Cern will not swallow/blow-up the planet. I will go out on a limb and point out that any sufficiently advanced civilization will most likely have built one of these and we see no evidence of such destroyed areas of space.

Also, any sufficiently advanced civilization wouldnt travel all the way here to turn cows inside-out or to anally probe people. Honestly, from space they could just access the internet and learn the scope of human knowledge or cure their curiosity.

I agree whole heartedly , if they intercepted the internet and read and understood that people were being anally probed and cows were being turned inside out they would certainly stay away .

Then again if they had no understand of our verbal or written communications they might assume that is the proper way to greet us from watching the internet and come say hello .

Only in this case, the bullets (protons) are accelerated to nearly the speed of light. They use two beams moving in opposite directions and when they desire, they tweak the two beams into a head on collision.

Since the particles in the beams are moving so fast, they have gobsmackingly high kinetic energy. When the particles hit, they produce a huge shower of broken peices that are then detected and analyzed to see what they are.

Maybe the likely threat is that the advances in physics through lessons learned here will increase nuclear weapons proliferation and the likelihood of usage in the event that cleaner and more compact nuclear weapons are developed as a result.

Basically, this would be any way around using fission to kick-start a fusion reaction. Antimatter, exotic matter á la leptonic backdoors, whatever.

The upside is that fallout may be less of a problem, due to the lack of fission products and more efficient yields in a next-generation weapon. The downside is that when you have a really clean and efficient hammer, everything looks like a nail, and that's not a good thing while there are still thousands of warheads kicking around that are not so environmentally friendly. Next generation weapons would likely be destabilizing, which could lead to a pre-emptive attack. Or someone uses a "clean" weapon, but still crosses the perceived nuclear threshold, which gets a nuclear response, and things spiral out of control.

On the other hand, maybe we get fusion plants or some other clean energy revolution and everything is nice and happy. Or maybe that causes oil to tank and a new war breaks out as economies collapse. Or maybe we all end up in an artificial singularity, and it's basically a giant group hug on a subatomic level, which sounds friendly enough.

Or nothing really happens, and the only thing that gets sucked into a hole is money. That's really what it's made for. That and giving graduate, doctorate, and post-doc folks something to occupy themselves with.

Considering the fact that they are playing with the other dimensions, at the quantum level, that gives me a really bad feeling.

Time and again I have seen phenomena/circumstances portrayed in fiction that eerily brush up against future truths. If the background ideas behind "Event Horizon" or the back end plot of "Doom" are hints at actually opening Pandora's box... well, watch the fuck out. We have no idea whats on the other side waiting to come out.

Lhc uses powerful electro magnets to keep particles suspended by a 360 degree magne5ic field. They cause the particle to travel when they increase the field one section at a time , kinda like a magnetic levitation train (monorail at disney world ).

To answer your question CERNs main focus is to sponge money for a pointless project that only those seeking the funding understand. At everyone else's expense of course.
