Question to tech guys about laptop | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 68792244 United States 04/06/2015 11:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just wipe the drive and install 7. Trust me, it'll work just fine. I don't care who says what about keys and licenses. I bought a win 8 desk top and put 7 on it with no license key. I figure if I paid for 8 there is no moral issue in reverting to an older OS. Fuck it. Now one issue you will have is you will need to go to hp and find drivers for wifi and such. Put them on a thumb drive because you will need them to get it going. |

This is different from a desktop which will completely wipe the drive, they do this to lower the cost of purchasing a laptop. Here is an example of an Acer laptop being formatted. Do a search on which laptop model you have and how to access the format screen during start up. Once you have finished the process (Takes several hours, keep plugged in) you will have to manually disable all the pre-bundled crap and spend hours updating your computer. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 30728137 Canada 04/06/2015 11:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | did I not state in original post I used to windows but laptop come with stuff (drivers specific to brand) etc. That's why I yet not do what I usually do with a desk computer. Quoting: Korats01 The drivers are stored on an area of a laptops hard disk which will automatically be reinstalled once formatted. (Laptops are designed that way) Unless you went out to the store and bought additional hardware you installed yourself this shouldn't be an issue. Now if your still unsure about formatting your computer do this before you wipe your drive. [link to www.wikihow.com] And write down the names and versions of the drivers for your computer. All of which can be found on the internet. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 68729256 United States 04/07/2015 01:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My guess is that your "reformat" was something like a system restore that just restores factory software. This is helpful if the factory software has become corrupt. If you used a reformat/reinstall that saves old files then many infections can quickly propagate back to the system. I'm not sure why you would want to wipe the drive. It is an easy solution for work machines that all have similar images, but your personal pc is usually a bit too custom. You should just clean out the trash from your pc. There are plenty of websites that will hold your hand and walk you through cleaning your problems up completely. As a basic start I would. 1) Install CCleaner 2) Check every box to clean under disk and applications except for "wipe disk space" 3) Run Cleaner 4) Run registry cleaner on Ccleaner 5) Uninstall software that is not needed through windows or ccleaner 6) Reset Machine 7) Download and run a cleaner like malwarebytes 8) Uninstall malwarebytes 8) Reset Machine 9) Install and run ADWCleaner 10) Uninstall ADWCleaner 11) Reset Machine 12) Download and run hitmanpro (If it won't let you remove because you belong to a corporate domain, just write down the reg files it lists and manually delete them... If regedit will not let you delete a registry entry because of nasty null values put there by some hijack bots then you can use registry registrar to force delete them) 13) Uninstall hitmanpro 14) Open your browsers and remove bogus extensions 15) Check browser settings to make sure you are not redirected through a proxy that you don't want to be directed through 16) Change home page to fight reinfection 17) Reset browser. 18) Repeat CCleaner steps 2 - 5 19) Uninstall CCleaner 20) Reset Machine If you come up with a few bugs that resist removal then you can google them. If your support libraries and drivers are jacked then you can use combofix to swap them out with good ones. |
