Anonymous Coward User ID: 68447250 United States 04/07/2015 07:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes. If you buy a cheap guitar you will never ever learn. It will sound like shit and make your fingers bleed. You mean quality, it's important to blend sound and playability when starting out. Go to the big accoustic room at guitar center and play them all and I bet your favorite isn't the 3 grand gibson. |

I found an Alvarez for 150 bucks that sat in the guys closet, still had the pickguard protector and the strings still had thier coating on them. watch Marty on youtube as he is a basic level instructor with almost 1k videos. There are thousands of videos on Youtube. The more you practice the better you get. Dont give up when you can feel your heartbeat in your fingertips, the more you play the longer you can play as you develop callouses on your tips. Xbox has a game called Rocksmith, this game scales to your playing level with a real guitar in your hand and is an awesome teaching tool. Enjoy and Rock On!! Good Luck |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 25247748 United States 04/07/2015 07:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get a $50 acoustic and Clip on Snark brand tuner, take off all the strings. By a fresh set of Martin Marques 12's Silver And Silk strings. Find and install the G string. Now with just the G string on the guitar learn to manipulate the string and work the tuner, tune it and play around the fret board. With the single string you are now able to play most melodies. Turn on a radio and try to play along any RAMONES song will do, all the solos are single note solos. (Think "I want to be sedated") If this is boring or difficult or your finger hurts too much, I'd expect you will never take the time to install the other 5 strings, don't be alarmed Joey Ramone still has not installed them either! If you expected to be playing like Hendrix already just sell the guitar or smash it, it's quite hopeless. If you find yourself up all night you might actually have some talent and might be obsessed enough. When you advance try to sing and play a melody at the same time, if you have a singing voice even better. End of lesson one hope you had fun! |

Next, get a guitar (acoustic or electric). First thing I'd do is learn each individual note on the fretboard. Then, learn the major and minor chords (and each note within each chord) and as many inversions for each chord as possible up and down the entirety of the neck. Next learn the major and minor pentatonic scales, and some extensions. That'll keep you busy for a while. :) YouTube is all you need (GuitarJamz would probably be best), and you can also Google chord charts or download an app or two. |
Tony253 User ID: 17440182 United States 04/07/2015 10:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | He has hundreds of lesson videos...he has suggestions for drills, practice techniques, scales, etc. By the time you finish the beginner course, you should be able to strum lots of songs. I will add one obvious piece of advice...You need to play/practice everyday! If you want to build callouses and more importantly, the hand muscles needed to play need to be exercised. I'm not talking hours, if you get in only 15-20 minutes daily, thats fine. Also, don't laugh about hand/finger stretching and massage...if you don't believe me, try playing if the big muscle on your fret hand is sore. The other key is repetition, play the same chords, riffs over and over...noodle constantly to keep it fun but have some practice structure with lessons. A day without GLP info is like a day without sunshine... |

Balaal User ID: 41629231 United States 04/14/2015 04:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Rocksmith is a ridiculous gimmick. Look up the Alfred's self teaching books Preferably find one that incorporates basic music theory alongside learning guitar. I'm positive there will be one for it. Alfred's is the most reputable self teaching books I know of. Most tutors I've known use the professional ones as a means for teaching. #1 thing though. If you want to be successful, don't stop playing. Even if it's only for 5 minutes a day. Just goof around with a chord or two for a minute. I've been playing for about 12 years and if I don't practice for a week my fingers start getting dumb on me. It's much worse when you first start. AT LEAST 5 MINUTES A DAY if you can't manage the will for the honest minimum of 15-30 Good luck fella. Getting screwed by life isn't half as bad when you're not a tight ass. |
