Global dimming. It's official. Particulate pollution in the air has decreased the amount of sunlight reaching the earth. How much? A fraction of a percent? Try 10% globally over the past 50 years. Worse yet, global dimming is thought to be counteracting CO2 and its greenhouse effect, lessening the worldwide temperature increase called global warming. Why's that bad? Because, in the coming decades, particulate pollution is expected to level off, while CO2 emissions are expected to rise strongly, multiplying the effects of global warming as we know it. "That means a temperature rise of 10 degrees Celsius by 2100 could be on the cards, giving the UK a climate like that of North Africa, and rendering many parts of the world uninhabitable." Could these backward sunspots be having an effect on earth?
August 15, 2006: On July 31st, a tiny sunspot was born. It popped up from the sun's interior, floated around a bit, and vanished again in a few hours. On the sun this sort of thing happens all the time and, ordinarily, it wouldn't be worth mentioning. But this sunspot was special: It was backward.
"We've been waiting for this," says David Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight in Huntsville, Alabama. "A backward sunspot is a sign that the next solar cycle is beginning."

"Backward" means magnetically backward. Hathaway explains:
Sunspots are planet-sized magnets created by the sun's inner magnetic dynamo. Like all magnets in the Universe, sunspots have north (N) and south (S) magnetic poles. The sunspot of July 31st popped up at solar longitude 65o W, latitude 13o S. Sunspots in that area are normally oriented N-S. The newcomer, however, was S-N, opposite the norm.

Recently:
A MAGNIFICENT COLLAPSE
(Tuesday August 15) There was not only an example of a big burst of convection over warm water imploding after equally rapidly exploding, it was one of the more dramatic such instances one is ever going to see.
Then, fortunately, not only did the whole thing go kaput, by late evening the only evidence left on satellite imagery that anything ever existed was a narrow circular ring of harmless wispy clouds around the edge of what just few short hours before was a roiling mass of thunderstorms.

I have looked at that capture and I still don't have a grasp of what is trying to be accomplished there. Arghhh they trying to intensify it, steer it, or destroy it?
By the way, last week, Little Debby posed "such a threat!" that oil prices went up "just in case". Anyone looking at the tracking could see that Debby was staying well out to sea (fooking sailors, no doubt), and was not about to come into port. |
