Why are America's malls dying?

There is absolutely nothing in the mall that I can't get somewhere else for a way better deal. Malls are mainly for attention whores and assholes who think overpaying for pointless materialistic crap makes them more important.

The rent is too damn high.

I have very little money and I sure don't buy clothes at the mall.

More like Goodwill.

Because America is getting poorer and poorer each generation and its people don't have money to blow on stupid crap anymore.

The internet is killing physical places to go and shop...

Probably bc you can buy anything on the internet for better prices and the fact - that someone mentioned internet in general.

Although I was just at Disney and the internet unfortunately didn't kill Disney Crowded as ever

wrong, one of the most well-off couples I know buy exclusively from Goodwill and church sales. They are not young hip types either.

I think, too, that last year's high gas prices got people out of "the habit"...

my take.

Malls came about in the early 1970s in a big way in our area on the East Coast.

they were new, exciting, fun to be in (for some, not me).

they have simply lived their life span. They are not new, fun, modern anymore.

today they are predictable, overpriced, boring.

. . . . but they never sold horse tack, fabrics, or any of the other things I really care about. So I never really used malls except for teenage employment.


internet sales, okay. thrift stores, okay. make it yourself, great.

malls, yawn.

People go to stores to try stuff on and get the sizes right.

Then they go online and order it for cheaper...much cheaper.

Not to mention all the punk kids that hang out at malls AKA mall-rats.

And the senior citizens who think it is acceptable to use the mall to take their daily walks in. Mean-while NEVER actually buying anything.

Goodwill is a goldmine for re-designing clothes with the help of Pinterest.

Technology and science via the digital revolution putting people out of work and making them more dependent on control. And they say the religious will be the ones putting people in the neo-feudal dark ages

They are the canaries in the coal mine.

I'm an executive in retail and after 25 years I can tell you with absolute certainty the largest factor is a person's ability to purchase products online. Again, not the only factor.

because americans are too fat to walk around a mall and they would rather shop online

Rent is astronomical
Stores are always "out of stock" of your size, color, model #, etc.
Teens and flash mobs
Gas prices

I have to be able to smell things before I buy them. some things off-gas, or have an irritating texture.

can be clothes
mattresses
some leather goods treated with certain chemicals.

I have to make sure the things I buy do not have any outgassing issues.


anyone remember Ikea's Billy, the particleboard bookcase, it made you sick.

Because once taxes go up then they never come down. Malls get taxed to hell and back and the greedy politicians should be lowering if not eliminating those taxes so Malls can compete with the internet. But those clowns will never do that. They will sit back and watch malls go bankrupt before they ever try to fix the problem. Politicians destroy much more than they fix. In fact they rarely fix anything.

little stores in shopping centers are fine. my favorite place to shop. Stores that open right to the parking lot.

so-called strip malls. They are doing fine, last time I read about them as REITs. Real Estate Investment Trusts.


and that is also just about the only place I buy clothing.

Because they suck and are boring.
