While you are deflecting a magnetic field, you are putting tremendous pressure on the magnet making the field, in this case the earth. Is that a bad thing? I'm pretty sure it is. Since we don't even really understand magnetism, it's foolhardy to play with this toy. Could they permanently destroy the magnetic field? We would certainly be fucked if they did.

Just let them get on with it, they are attempting to alter the earth orbit just enough to get us out the path of an incoming object, why do you think the governments of the world aren’t interfering, they know what’s at stake here. The solar winds will push us out if the field weakens enough, however radiation will spike during each attempt, get a gigacounter and watch real time.
