I turn the key and it clicks once, but will not start. battery is fully charged. I have a troy bilt mower. Battery fully charged. It will click once when I turn the key, but the engine will not turn over. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13127957 What the hell is wrong with it? recheck your battery connection and less beer tomorrow morning. If still not working. it's basic stuff google it. Yep. Tighten the bolts on your battery leads before you get drunk and mow the grass for the second time this week since you are unemployed. There is a loose connection |

There is a loose connection I use a screwdriver to crank it now bypassing the damn bad solenoid. Fires up every time now. |

I turn the key and it clicks once, but will not start. battery is fully charged. On some riding lawn-mowers There are several safety-switch interlocks that will prevent the engine from starting. There is a switch usually under the seat, so that when you are sitting on it the switch is engaged. There is a switch on the clutch mechanism as well. There may be additional switch on the blade-engage mechanism. This is to prevent someone starting it without someone in the seat, the clutch depressed, and the blades disengaged. If any of those switches goes bad the unit will not run. . |

If not, $12 gets you a solenoid for a Ford from 1960-1984 (or newer) and you can make it fit ... well... or not. |

I turn the key and it clicks once, but will not start. battery is fully charged. If it is shot, the starter won't roll. The power goes through that first. If that's shot nothing gets through to crank the starter. To test it, get a screwdriver and turn the key to the run position. Touch both those posts with the nuts on them at the same time to allow the electricity to jump across the posts through the screwdriver. If the starter cranks, then your solenoid is shot, get a new one. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68941495 You can even start it that way if you can't repair it for some reason. Just let the power flow through the screwdriver until the engine starts up. Take the screwdriver off once it gets gojng. If that works get a clip on remote starter switch rather than doing a solenoid replacement. Make it easy on yourself if the mower is that old. 7 Billion people on the planet! That's a BIG number! And I am one. |

If it does work, means the solenoid is going bad and you will need a new one soon. The hammer trick only works for so long until the solenoid completely craps out. |

Quoting: filth Ummm, hello, the hammer trick has no effect on the solenoid at all. If the hammer trick works, it means there's a dead spot in the starter armature. And you need to hold the key in the start position while you swing the hammer. |
