North Idaho, the beautiful lakes and a little further south, the beautiful stream and rivers.

The Lewis Clark train takes you through awesome wilderness into Montana. The Selway. Lochsa and Clearwater rivers are pristine and lovely.

Follow the clearwater River to the Snake River and take a jet boat up the Snake into Hell's Canyon

Re: If I ever come over to the USA for a couple of months...
I want to...

...drive across the continent. What kind of a car would you suggest I rent/buy for this kind of a road trip? I'm traveling either alone or with a (male) friend. My girlfriend isn't interested in visiting USA and prefers to travel to Africa on her own (we often travel separately because we have such dissimilar interesters).

...see the south. I'm especially intrigued by the southern food, drink and music. Any tips for locations where to get acquainted with the southern cousine and music? Not the tourist kind of shit, but the real stuff.

...visit north east and Maine, in particular. I'm interested in the history of that region.

...spend some time on militaria. What would you say are the best military museums/tours in the USA? I'm know there are battleships turned into museums, but are there similar exhibitions about the other branches than the Navy?

...drive down the west coast from the north (the nature in the state of Washington interests me) to south, before I fly back from LAX.

op look up state tourism sites for all the states. They usually have something similar to a magazine highlighting the key spots for each state. In state they mail them free I am not sure out of country. The u.s. Has some amazing people and places to visit.

I am currently in Alabama. We have some cool caves here but mammoth caves in Kentucky is an experience. Really there is so much awesome everywhere well unless you are driving through 400 miles of corn fields. Lol even that's awesome just really boring.

Start in Seattle, drive down the coast (Honda?), across the south, up 75 (visit the air force museum near dayton) up to Toledo and over to new england states... fly back from New York.

Flying back from LAX makes you retrace or miss something.

Have fun, OP.

And get a new girlfriend. It sucks being with someone you don't have much in common with. Especially, when it comes to traveling. This could have been a really good trip to share with a girlfriend.

The make doesn't matter but GET A CONVERTIBLE. Spend the extra cash, but it'll be sweet you'll have a nice view.

The south? Well what kind of food? texmex, is of course south west Texas. Chicken and biscuits? Tennessee/Kentucky. Ribs? Memphis. St Louis. I guess it depends on the style you want. Fish fry and drinks? New Orleans or down to the keys. Party like you are in Europe? Miami Beach, of course.

All the great southern rockers are long dead. so their graves are tourist traps.

Maine? Not much going on there, but check out Porland... it's the only city worth a damn, but not much. More interested in Stephen King? hit the RR's (Rural roads).

Navy stuff? San Diego, and New York have good stuff.

You need to be more specific.

And of course

Don't forget about Las Vegas. See the wasteland of the 1+ million empty houses and abandoned casino's with the rise of Macau.

NY has great stuff and food, but the people suck so bad, I will never step foot north of the Mason Dixon line ever again.
