Is it unethical to make your living playing a game?
I posted here recently that my father is a professional poker player and someone replied "Maybe your dad should get a real job...". I don't know where this person is coming from. People all over the world worship people who play games for a living (professional athletes).

Don't try to tell me that using gambling to make a living necessarily has a bad stigma either! Who can argue with the idea that trading stocks is nothing more than gambling! Yet, successful stock brokers and traders are held right up there in the same category as doctors and lawyers, frequently.

Please explain this to me.

Yeah, without gambling our system would fall apart (not that that's necesarily a bad thing).

What is ethical and not ethical under a capitalist system? That a few can earn as much as nations?
What ethics are you talking about?

Anything is ethical as long as one does not infringe on the freedom of others, this applies as long as the cannabalistic, capitalist system is prevailing.

I believe that the first part of your statement is an absolute truth. I'm an American who lives in "socialist" China and I'll tell you that they believe whole-heartedly in that first part of your statement. China is supposedly one of the most socialist nations on earth.

I don't see how the first part of your statement has anything to do with the second part. wtf

In a nut shell the present system of capitalism does not mix at all with a system of democracy where the individuals have equal rights because sooner or later through the structure of the pyramid there will be be those manipulating the system through economic power etc.The haves and the have nots.

Basically the problem has to do with Human Nature, which fallable AND immature to be able to be altruistic in its existence and share with others.

As long as humans are not real humans more like animals there will be capitalism so one has to wait for humanity to mature further before implementing new systems, however we see welfare states trying to reduce the full flux of capitalism etc. this is part of the process of maturity which is apt to take a few centuries.

Our system is certainly not the best one but even religions that are supposedly all spiritual look at righteous acts as being like a currency that can be saved up and cashed in in their version of heaven for big rewards and/or riches. This is supposed to all be spiritual but it's like a spiritual version of capitalism in a way (strive for and save up for a wonderful retirement in the afterlife).

Maybe we are here at least in part to strive and bleed a little trying to earn something, maybe that helps us progress. Capitalism certainly provides a chance to compete, strive, fall on our faces and succeed. I think that's all important in our overall development. Not only that, all socialist or communist countries have had to take on a form of capitalism or else their people would have starved and their countries would have completely collapsed. What do you say about that?

Re: Is it unethical to make your living playing a game?
I think that the opposite will become true which converges the indivdual freedom with fact that nobody should make a living from the misery of others or in other words the weaker ones who cannot manage to be of equal footing.

The problem again is that we are all standing on a ladder non of us is standing on the same step, we are not equal to each other in experiences, this is from a cosmic point of view, so there will always be those left behind and its not their fault.

Those enlightened and who spiritually advanced can implement the message of "love thy next" in the true sense of the word.but they are not many in the present world and here we come to the prevailing economic system such as capitalism, with time and with growing numbers of those with altruistic view capitalism will shift mode into something we call today socialism.

For my partI would have accpeted to live in a society where we share equally and work with the things we are interested in and with full fledged indivdual freedom , no directors or dictators, but then its the few who think alike who might have a chance of achieving such a thing on a small island in todays world.

Mind you I have had a very successful career in this capitalitic world however my views are a mixture of realities and cosmology.

The one person who influenced my view is the Danish cosmologist Martinus Thomsen a Danish think who wrote many books regarding this life before and after. He is a bit repetative but worthwhile looking at.This is no religion
www.martinus.dk

Of his many books the one to start with is Logic after that one can decide if its soemthing for one self or just throw it out of the window.
So

I would say Capitalism will end up in something else more like sharing and caring among the humans once their nature advances from the present stage, everything is totallity and its impossible to view a sector in life without including all others.

Life's a game.

Last Thursday I decided that I'm going back to work with a new attitude, playing it like Survivor or the Big Brother house, especially since I've spent the past two months being slammed down by cutthroat politics.

It's totally revitalized things for me.

Re: Is it unethical to make your living playing a game?
what is he producing for his paycheck?
how does he help anyone?
is he supporting an industry that robs the community and sends the money far away?
does he contribute to "gamblers anonymous"?

he should just admit he is living on the fringes of what is considered ethical, and is probably amoral in his philosophy

My father maintains that he's an entertainer. Very wealthy people come to the casinos that he plays in and they frequently lose thousands of dollars in a night. It's entertainment for them but the money goes to people like my father. Got it? It's recreation for the wealthy and a source of income for my father. He owns a small business that he operates out of his home as well, by the way.

That would destroy the world economy. Why? Because stock markets are almost all gambling, the whole economy is basically all gambling. Where would you draw the line? lmao
