What's so weird about a diabetic cat? At least I didn't put my cat down when he was diagnosed with diabetes like a lot of owners do. I promise you it ain't cheap either having a diabetic cat. The insulin today cost us $268. That's just the insulin. We also have to pay for needles, a blood meter, test strips, and lancets to test twice a day with.
 Quoting: TrustNoOneKS

LMAOOO!! that poor cat! why don't you give your cat some diatomaceous earth instead of that poison. it's natural, super cheap and will cure your cat of it's diabetes.

Thanks for the heads up op nice work.
On a side note. Try buying grain free cat food if you don't already believe it or not the gmo grain can worsen your cats condition. It may even get him off insulin.

Thanks again

cheers

Thanks! hf

Yes, they switched his diet when he was diagnosed. He is on a completely wet diet now. I had no idea that dry catfood could even cause diabetes. So there is another added expense there that I didn't include because in my house if one cat gets something, they all get it so I end up having to buy 36 cans of catfood a week just to feed them all!

I've never heard of that. Will certainly look into it! Interestingly, with cats, they can go into remission and he has. He was diagnosed with it 3 1/2 years ago and was only on insulin for 1 month or so and it went into remission. It returned again almost 2 years ago and sadly this time he didn't go into remission, but I will certainly look into that because I would love to have him off of the insulin again!

I normally don't post for fear of being banned however.... I had a cat that became diabetic and over weight. I did some reach and we switched from the hard cheap food to the wet healthier food. I think fancy feast wet food if the best for the money. After about a month on the healthier food he dropped a lot of weight, Diabetes went away, and he no longer has problems peeing.

This might not be the case but please check the food you feed your cat. Check for the first ingredient. Make sure is meat and not a by-product.

Once in our new house we put the litter box in the basement so they have to walk the steps. Man oh man he is back to the ninja kitty weight again.

But check the food, fresh air, and exercises they get. sorry for off topic.

Side note Lookout mountain TN has a government bunker under lookout mountain. The "lower cave" under Ruby Falls was closed off and drilled access to it from rail road tracks running through. Might have to with the Walmart tunnels. I know this for a FACT.(work at Ruby Falls) off work time to go home and mow.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10630957

Yes, the diet does have a lot to do with it. Like I said in another post, he did go into remission once before and we kept him on the canned catfood afterwards anyways after all the research I had done on dry food. He did have a weight issue. He started out at 20 pounds 3 1/2 years ago and is now down to 14, but we still haven't been able to get him to go back into remission this time.

Thanks for the interesting information too on Ruby Falls. Will definitely have to look into that!

Thanks for the post and excellent pictures!

Kudos to you for taking care of that cat!!!!!

Being a human diabetic sucks, but it must really suck to be a diabetic cat. hf
 Quoting: StormeyGoddess

Thanks! My dad and my brother were both diabetic so that is why it was such a no brainer for me to take care of the cat. The funniest thing is I have always had a huge needle phobia and was always scared I would get diabetes because of it. I've actually passed out getting my blood drawn. When my mom was in the hospital to have her appendix removed, they had to hide the IV stuff under the covers before I could go into the room.

I was really worried about giving him shots because being around needles just makes me feel queasy and nauseous and like I'm going to pass out, but I was extremely surprised that I was able to do this without any issues other than the occasional accidental jab to myself, which will make me queasy and nauseous and feel like I'm going to pass out. LOL.

Hey OP, I had a diabetic cat, and we only paid 30 dollars for his insulin and needles per month at our vets office. Also, if you ask your vet for a syringe of sailine flush and put Kyra syrup in it instead, you will have an emergency kit if his insulin drops to low and he has seizures.

Yeah, they have him on human insulin because the animal kind isn't as effective for him. That's a good idea on the syringe with syrup in it. My vet always told me to just wipe honey on his gums if it happens and I was like really? You do realize what cat we are talking about here?

Hint: He's a real biter and scratcher and has done serious injury to me in the past. He actually bit someone at the vet's office once and they had to notify animal control about it. They are so scared of him that they couldn't get him out of his carrier and they had to call me to come up there and get him out for them.

Your cat would snap out of it diabetes if its owners would care correctly for the animal. Yea yea yea say what u will, three adopted cats all diabetic when they were adopted. Two years later with the proper care all cats are normal and very healthy. One cat weighed in at 27lbs cuz its previous owner was a fool. Today she is a healthy 14.5 lbs.

Walmart is sending a message, but you are looking the other direction...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59901593

whatever on the not caring properly for the cat. He did go into remission once and we have not been so lucky this second time. You wouldn't say that if you knew how much this cat means to me. Thanks for your post though. I pray that none of yours have it return as it is my understanding that it is highly likely to return if the animal has had it before.

Are you getting the bottle? Ask about the insulin pens, Costco pharmacy will sell them one or two at a time. You will save money.

I had two diabetic cats who passed of other causes, then two more, now just one....I dxed him myself bc of experience and having the glucometer at home.....he was always drinking a lot of water and he was the one peeing out of the box due to diabetes induced UTI.

BC their urine can be "sweet" if sugar levels are even a little off, they can be prove to bladder infections.

Hope you find less expensive insulin....I've had those glass bottles break on me...brand new....the pens are plastic, so no breaking.

The cat needs nascent iodine in the water bowl. Add flax oil to the food too. Raw cat food instead of cooked. A little pinch of baking soda in the water dish too. The cat is too acidic and the cooked food not only is killing the cats pancreas, the food lacks sufficient iodine.

My dog has had diabetes for a year. When I first took the vet's prescription to my regular pharmacy I learned it would cost around $100. My pharmacist then told me that Walmart pharmacy carries Novulin N for about $25. Only Walmart has it for that price and it has to have the ReliOn logo on it. Your vet would would have to tell you whether or not your cat can use that type of insulin and what the dosage would be since there are so many different kinds. You may know this info already but I felt compelled to share it with a fellow mom of a furry diabetic :-)

Thanks for sharing! Zep wasn't well controlled on that brand, unfortunately, so he was placed on human insulin, but I really do appreciate the thought! The good news is that his bottle of insulin generally lasts 6 months, so even though it was $268 for a bottle, that does work out to around $45 a month. It just really takes a bite out of our expenses 2 times a year.
