Geologists warn megaquake and tsunami could hit central New Zealand

May 15, 2015 – NEW ZEALAND – Scientists finally have proof that central New Zealand could be ticking down to a highly damaging “megathrust” earthquake. Earlier research has suggested the seabed between the Wairarapa and Marlborough is capable of generating magnitude 7-plus quakes. Now researchers have found solid geological evidence that an area off the coast of Wairarapa and fringing Cook Strait causes “megathrust” quakes and tsunami similar to, but probably smaller than, the devastating magnitude 9.0 March 2011 event in Japan. The work, out Tuesday morning, highlights the active threat the southern Hikurangi margin – where the Pacific Plate is being dragged down below the Australian Plate – poses to life and livelihood from Hawke’s Bay south to the Wairarapa, Wellington and Marlborough. The Alpine Fault, which extends further south from that plate boundary, is also a hazardous feature that will generate a magnitude 8 quake when it ruptures, possibly some time in the next 50 to 100 years.

More than 50 dead, dozens injured in Colombia landslide

May 2015 – COLOMBIA – A landslide sent mud and water crashing onto homes in a town in Colombia’s northwest mountains on Monday, killing more than 50 people and injuring dozens, officials said. “The earth slid into the course of the La Liboriana ravine, then the dammed water caused an avalanche which destroyed everything in its path” in Salgar in Antioquia department, regional police commander Jose Angel Mendoza said in an interview. The national disaster unit said in a statement that 52 people were killed and 37 others had been treated for injuries. Rescue teams, including search dogs, continue working in the area looking for an unknown number of missing people.

Ground level in Mount Hakone volcanic area rises as much as 12 cm

MITO, IBARAKI PREF. – The ground level in the Owakudani hot-spring area of Mount Hakone has risen by up to 12 cm since mid-April, days before volcanic activity intensified in the popular tourist spot, according to a geographical survey institute.

Dallas Area Has 3.3 Magnitude Earthquake; Nobody Hurt

The Dallas area has been shaken by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake happened at 1:14 p.m. Monday, with the epicenter 3 miles south-southwest of Farmers Branch.

Dallas police had no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.

All the time I lived in Austin, never did I hear of quakes along the I-35 corridor. Now they happen all the time!

Yes, I've noticed that they hardly ever show the Quakes from this region , although that's no real suprise coming from them...

None. They know how dangerous that area is. They know that if people woke up to the realities of what could happen if that thing blew, panic would ensue the moment it blew

That's the good thing about being here , as we know there is ALWAYS more than one source of information rather than a censored list such as USGS!

Thank goodness we have the resources. At least for now.

Apocalyptic skies return above Chile after second volcano erupts and entire landscape is bathed in blood red

More astonishing, apocalyptic images of a volcanic eruption have emerged from Chile, this time from Villarrica in the south of the country.

A band of cloud had wrapped itself around the peak as lava spewed into the air, giving the entire landscape an eerie blood-red glow.

Burst pipeline spills 21,000 gallons of oil into ocean off California

GOLETA, Calif. – An estimated 21,000 gallons of crude oil dumped into the ocean from a broken pipeline just off the central California coast before it was shut off on Tuesday, creating a spill stretching about 4 miles along the beach, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Santa Barbara County health officials have shut down Refugio State Beach, the central site of the spill, though many had abandoned the site already because of the foul smell.

That smell brought county firefighters to the beach earlier in the day to discover the spill.

"They found about a half-mile slick of dark, black crude oil in the ocean," fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni said.

The movie "End Day" (made in 2005) was an interesting play on Groundhog Day, a bit cheesy but okay. I watched this a few weeks ago and never clued into the day!

Not saying this video is correct in the least, just interesting.
