The tinderbox house, the ashes of self.

The detective on shift, Ames just received a call. It’s a rainy night full of troubles and phone calls. No amount of mocha double-roasted coffee nor his grandmother’s mints could prepare him for this first night of his shift. Answering another call he gets a tip on the shadowy figure, Senator Andre.

The Senator has been caught up in a bit of crime as of late. He’s been “wheeling and dealing” and doing things carefree with no concern for the strong arm of the law. Lately, he has been running traffic lights and segmenting the population through the use of force and carefree politics.

The P.D. seemed a good fit for Ames as he started his new career. Lots of opportunity for learning and growth and it provides some sort of structure and control. Good things for a new detective.

“Control, this is unit 25A. I’m en route to the scene. No backup needed. I’ll investigate further.”

“Copy.”

Ames grabs his trenchcoat and runs to his car. He forgets his keys. He runs back into the station, drenched and slipped on the entryway.

There was already water in the causeway and no one but him has been in the station for hours?

Stumbling to get back onto his feet and rearrange his glasses he sees some text on the window to the station.

“Senator, we need to talk” Ames thinks, “Well, let's get this over with. ”

He looks at his suit coat and he seems something shiney. A lapel. “The American Flag? What’s this doing on my coat?” He stumbles to the desk and sees the bottle of Jim Beam. “But I don’t drink.”

His phone rings, “Yes?”

“Ames, where are you? You’re late from work. Another late night at the office?”

“Alice?”

His head hurts. Colors start to blur. He’s about to puke. “I’ll be home soon honey, call me a taxi. Thanks.”
