Sports injury advice
hello all just a quick post to ask advice on a knee injury I picked up through Running, the doctor has told me to not run for 2- 3 weeks, as I may have damaged a tendon on the outer side of my knee, is it possible to do other exercise to keep up my stamina as the doctor said I shouldn't do any exercises using my knee as it would just make matter worse...

My only qualm is this doctor didn't actually look at my knee just asked me if it hurt and if its swollen, it doesn't look swollen nor feel it, it does twinge a little if I turn left as its on my left knee, and is sore 1st thing in the morning which I expect after sleeping...

I've worked hard to get my stamina up as Im training for Army entry I can afford to take a few days off as I cant apply until april 2016, however I just don't want to lose my stamina gains, I can also do squats, split squats and step ups fine without any pain...

any advice would be greatly appreciated guys and many thanks in advance.

Re: Sports injury advice
I would definitely at least start wearing a knee brace.

They are fairly cheap and can be bought at your local store.

You don't want to further your possible injury any more.

God bless. :o)

Re: Sports injury advice
You can't strengthen a tendon through exercise. I hate to break it to you, but your doc is right. You can push it until it blows and go through surgery, but I don't recommend it. You need to let it heal and eat proper, hydrate etc…. imo

cheers buddy I been using a tubi grip bandage with a hole for the kneecap to move and have applied R.I.C.E and quite right I don't want to further the injury as it could set me back even longer its just the stamina I don't want to lose.

It wasn't the tendon I was trying to strengthen it was to try and keep up with calf and upper leg muscle strength the moment I feel pain through these exercises I would stop immediately, thank you though and yeah surgery wouldn't be a good option to work towards ;)

Let it heal, too many people push through injury and mess things up worse. Your body has signaled you've maybe over did it and it needs downtime to repair. What's two weeks vs months of rehab for surgery. Maybe do low impact like swimming for a bit.

yeah your right just disheartening really, after over coming shin splints to then have this two weeks later, would it still be ok to do low impact exercises ?

aaah knee injuries are so good!

over a year ago i was sided for like 2 months without any leg work due to a bad knee.

when i was clear to start again i was a but sluggish but was up in pace in around a month.

if you have been doing your thing for sometime your stamina shouldnt get tgat affected.

Let it heal. Connective tissue injuries can come back to bite you years later, best to take it easy for now, maybe get a support, as has been suggested, but don't take that as permission to go back to training. Get busy on the bench, do upper body work for a while. Your lower musculature will soon recover once you're bak functioning on all cylinders.

Don't wear a knee brace for more than two hours a day and only if you really need to, such as when you do biking. If you wear it to much your body will get used to it and the muscles will diminish in size due to the brace doing some of the support work and will therefore cause more harm than good.

I live in Austria in the central ski area so they are amazing with damaged joints and this is their advice.

And take anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and apply cold presses. Rest is the only thing that will help and if your not applying until April thats no problem. The muscles and stamina you've developed won't deteriorate that quickly, its only when you're in plaster youd have a problem with muscle atrophy.

Listen to your doctor and follow exactly what he says. I blew out my shoulder when I was young (17 or so) when I tried playing baseball/football on it when I shouldn't have been. Allow yourself time to heal and get off your legs.

Take 2-3 aspirin for the anti-inflammatory benefits and walk instead of run until it's better.

Re: Sports injury advice
Get some of this in your medicine cabinet.

DMSO

The Power Of DMSO

DMSO works in several ways. First, as a topical compound, it has analgesic properties and reduces pain quickly - which is why it is great for rubbing on sore muscles and joints. Laboratory studies suggest that it decreases pain by blocking peripheral nerve C fibers. DMSO reduces inflammation by acting as an antioxidant - and so it neutralizes some of the free radicals that promote inflammation. Some evidence suggests that it also can ease swelling, further helping with aches and pains.

Second, DMSO is rich in sulfur - and sulfur is found in every cell and is essential for life. From what we know about DMSO, some of its sulfur is used to create new cells involved in the healing process and in the production of glutathione, the body's most powerful antioxidant.

Third, DMSO dissolves and transports other substances through the skin, which makes it a great carrier and helper in getting other substances into sore or damaged tissues. I have often mixed DMSO with pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory and pain medications, such as ketoprofen (Actron) or gabapentin (Neurotin), so that people can use these combinations topically without damaging the heart and digestive tract.

Are you running on a concrete surface? If so stop it! Get a pair of the best shoe inserts you can find and change your running shoes EVERY month.

STOP!

You have the rest of your life to exercise and workout.

Let nature heal you for a month then very, very slowly ease back into slow, smooth motion exercises. Start low weights, low reps and work up for another month.

Been there, done the wrong thing more than once until I learned my lesson.

Patience.

Re: Sports injury advice
Sorry for your injury, mate :(

I've been there before myself, and it's never fun.

Any injury should be rested until it heals. I know it feels like forever when you're waiting to get back into your routine, but you risk a LOT if you force yourself to keep pushing forward. You don't want to tear something and need surgery because you didn't give yourself time to heal.

You won't lose any stamina in 2 weeks. That I can say with 100% certainty.

If you want to keep busy, minimizing stress on the knee, then I'd suggest treading water in a pool (using 80% your arms) for as long as you can. There'd be almost no pressure on your knee, and you'd be surprised at how much it gets your heart pumping after 20 minutes of rapidly treading water.

Keep your spirits up and accept that injuries are just part of the natural course of things.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery :)

Biking or swimming are your alternatives. Likely you've got a torn meniscus which won't get better with rest. Matter of fact you'll know it's the meniscus if it gets more painful during night, interupting your sleep. Give it a month then go to an ortho and have it scoped. You won't be running for the next 4 months counting the rest peRiod

Re: Sports injury advice
I'm a marathoner/ultra runner and tore two ligaments in my ankle in November. I was told to rest, and couldn't run on it anyway. In about six weeks I was back running on the treadmill.

I have almost 500 miles in this year so far and just set my personal best 5K and 10K times, and running my first marathon of the year a week from Sunday. I'm also training for a 50 miler in October. Thank God for healing me.

(I've been running for 4 years)

(Not medical advice) but I'd listen to what the doctor says and if you have an established base you won't lose it that quickly. For me, cardio was still great but legs were a little sore the first week or two.

When you do get back you may want to check out Hoka brand running shoes and get fitted for some. They're not cheap at $170/pair, but help absorb a lot of the shock while running - at least they did for me - so maybe they would help you.

Off to run now... Best wishes.
