Jerusalem Christian Patriarchs Reject Christian Zionist Doctrines As False Teaching That Corrupts Biblical Message of Love, Justice And Reconciliation

Religious Leaders' Statement on Christian Zionism

"We Stand for Justice. We Can Do No Other"

JERUSALEM, AUG. 30, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Here is "The Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism" released Aug. 22. The statement was written by Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah of Jerusalem and other local heads of Churches in Jerusalem.

* * *

"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God." (Matthew 5:9)

Christian Zionism is a modern theological and political movement that embraces the most extreme ideological positions of Zionism, thereby becoming detrimental to a just peace within Palestine and Israel.

The Christian Zionist program provides a worldview where the Gospel is identified with the ideology of empire, colonialism and militarism. In its extreme form, it laces an emphasis on apocalyptic events leading to the end of history rather than living Christ's love and justice today.

We categorically reject Christian Zionist doctrines as false teaching that corrupts the biblical message of love, justice and reconciliation.

We further reject the contemporary alliance of Christian Zionist leaders and organizations with elements in the governments of Israel and the United States that are presently imposing their unilateral preemptive borders and domination over Palestine.

This inevitably leads to unending cycles of violence that undermine the security of all peoples of the Middle East and the rest of the world.

We reject the teachings of Christian Zionism that facilitate and support these policies as they advance racial exclusivity and perpetual war rather than the gospel of universal love, redemption and reconciliation taught by Jesus Christ.

Rather than condemn the world to the doom of Armageddon we call upon everyone to liberate themselves from the ideologies of militarism and occupation. Instead, let them pursue the healing of the nations!

We call upon Christians in Churches on every continent to pray for the Palestinian and Israeli people, both of whom are suffering as victims of occupation and militarism. These discriminative actions are turning Palestine into impoverished ghettos surrounded by exclusive Israeli settlements.

The establishment of the illegal settlements and the construction of the Separation Wall on confiscated Palestinian land undermine the viability of a Palestinian state as well as peace and security in the entire region.

We call upon all Churches that remain silent, to break their silence and speak for reconciliation with justice in the Holy Land.

Therefore, we commit ourselves to the following principles as an alternative way:

We affirm that all people are created in the image of God. In turn they are called to honor the dignity of every human being and to respect their inalienable rights.

We affirm that Israelis and Palestinians are capable of living together within peace, justice and security.

We affirm that Palestinians are one people, both Muslim and Christian. We reject all attempts to subvert and fragment their unity.

We call upon all people to reject the narrow world view of Christian Zionism and other ideologies that privilege one people at the expense of others.

We are committed to non-violent resistance as the most effective means to end the illegal occupation in order to attain a just and lasting peace.

With urgency we warn that Christian Zionism and its alliances are justifying colonization, apartheid and empire-building.

God demands that justice be done. No enduring peace, security or reconciliation is possible without the foundation of justice. The demands of justice will not disappear. The struggle for justice must be pursued diligently and persistently but without violence.

"What does the Lord require of you: To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)

This is where we take our stand. We stand for justice. We can do no other. Justice alone guarantees a peace that will lead to reconciliation with a life of security and prosperity for all the peoples of our land. By standing on the side of justice, we open ourselves to the work of peace -- and working for peace makes us children of God.

"God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation." (2 Corinthians 5:19)

Hacker turned theologian Simon Cozens puts forward an argument that the belief system known as "Christianity" in America is not Christianity. By which he means not that is a weird form of Christianity, or even that it is heretical or flawed, but, quite literally, that it is a completely different, unrelated, belief system that happens to have the same name:

The situation only makes sense if you consider a separate entity called "American Christianity" which is an entirely separate religion to Christianity. Not a branch of Christianity, not a form of Christianity, but something with absolutely no connection to Christianity at all. It's a separate religion. And what is the goal of this religion?

Look at it phenomenologically, look at it sociologically, and what do you see? Basically a syncretic folk religion, based primarily on American nationalism, an expression of the "pervasive religious dimension of American political life". Its purposes are basically civil and political. Its morality is taken from a highly selective and individualistic reading of the Old Testament, and it mixes in bits of consumerism, Zionism, Republican political values, and corporatism for good measure. Add to this an almost romantic sentimentality concerning the person of Jesus, much like the contribution of Catholicism to Vodoo religions, and suddenly it all makes sense.

its because everyone here tries to get in good with the preacher, and every preacher has to be schooled to be a preacher. they have preacher schools or bible colleges for such things. there is to easily a chance for agendas to be taught and the teachings of men arent neccessarily good either. what was it that Jesus said "Woe to you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven, against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. thereforeyou will recieve great condemnation. Woe to you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites! for you travel land and sea to win one procelyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much the son of hell as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides, etc etc etc America has a few probs with christianity just look at all the posts and with the christian posters theres a diverse myriad of responses, it would seem all christians would speak with one voice or atleast work together constructively but everyone is side tracked with being number one. i already know someone will state surprise denial shock or point out Jesus was speaking to the scribes and pharisees, dont believe me? watch! my defense? history repeats its self. besides the truth hurts and defense is the first outcome, but they will say something like not my church or my pastor isnt like that. a catholic will step in and say something of another, but they arent christian, mother mary didnt die for me and neither did the apostles, Jesus is the only way and anything other than that is akin to idol worship. perhaps a mormon will step forward and say something but he isnt christian either cause galations 1:6-9 says so. so the angel moroni is false and is in trouble. besides their story of how it all started keeps changing anyways. perhaps a jehovas witness will come forward but even he is wrong, they dont believe in hell, where as Jesus spoke of hell 18 times in teachings, more so than anyone else in the bible. seems to me they would listen, doesnt it? most of the philosophy in america is a feel good doctrine, no one listens to what criteria('s) need to be achieve in order for those blessings to come. Just watch! someone may say "who are you to judge!?!" but im not judging i am simply stating the obvious, bible says this, this is what i see, 1+1=2. am i wrong for saying this? i dont think so, a christian is supposed to constantly be checking themselves over for flaws, perhaps what i say will cause someone to look at themselves? i hope so. oh well my answer turned into an essay that will be deleted soon anyways. ill shut up now.

This 'Christian Zionism' is nothing but the Church trying to keep their holy sites preserved.

They know that Muslims have a history of tearing down churches and building mosques instead.

Believe me, I know. I've gone to a Calvary Chapel for many years. They like to go and visit Israel. It's nothing but self-interest.

They also believe that in the Tribulation, the Jewish Antichrist will slaughter Christians left and right.

How do you preserve by letting the Zionist Jews steal it?

Do you understand that much of the Christian Population of Jerusalem has been forced out?

The Zionist Jews are not Friends of any Christians.

Especially in the Holy Land.

If you love Israel so much why don't you move there?

You can't because you're not Jewish and Israel discriminates against everyone who is not Jewish.

I have never been to Israel and don't 'love' it. I know many people who would say they do. I was trying to give you a balanced perspective on how 'Christians' really view the Zionist situation. It is more selfish than a love of Israelis. They visit regularly and don't complain of how they are treated by the Israelis.

I also, would like to visit someday, in order to see the sites. I don't think that it is necessary to be 'Friends', at all. The point is, Israelis are not going to tear down Jewish sites that share the Christian heritage, however. They also understand the value of the tourist industry.

You do know what the Palestinians did to the Church of the Nativity, don't you? They ravaged it, they stole the everything inside, they used the Bible for toilet paper, it was completely trashed.

Re: Jerusalem Christian Patriarchs Reject Christian Zionist Doctrines As False Teaching That Corrupts Biblical Message of Love, Justice And Reconciliation
Holy Land churches attack Christian Zionism

The Vatican's envoy in the Holy Land and bishops from three other churches have launched a rare joint attack on the Christian Zionist movement, accusing it of promoting "racial exclusivity and perpetual war."

Christian Zionists form a growing part of the pro-Israel lobby in the United States, the Jewish state's main ally. They believe the return of Jews to the Holy Land and establishment of Israel are proof of God's promises to biblical patriarchs.

Churches in the Middle East often appear closer to the Palestinians, whose Christian minority makes up a substantial portion of their clergy in the region.

The "The Jerusalem Declaration On Christian Zionism" was signed by Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah, a Palestinian, and by bishops of the Episcopal, Evangelical Lutheran and Syrian Orthodox Churches in Jerusalem.

Many Christian Zionists are evangelical Protestants, and the declaration is a sign of a growing struggle between the groups.

"The Christian Zionist programme provides a world view where the Gospel is identified with the ideology of empire, colonialism and militarism," said the declaration, accusing Christian Zionists of hurting hopes for Middle East peace.

"We reject the teachings of Christian Zionism that facilitate and support these policies as they advance racial exclusivity and perpetual war," the declaration added.

The three main Christian Zionist groups in Jerusalem said in a statement that they were concerned at the declaration's "inflammatory language" and that it was far from the truth.

Christian Zionists stress Christianity's Jewish roots. Some back the movement to settle the occupied West Bank, the cradle of Jewish civilization, which Palestinians want as part of an independent state.

INFLAMMATORY

"We pray for peace. But we note with sadness that the present Palestinian government is totally dedicated to the destruction of Israel," the Christian Zionist groups said in their statement, referring to the governing Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

The prospect of Middle East peace talks has looked even more unlikely since Hamas's election victory in January. The group is formally dedicated to destroying Israel.

"The problem in the region is not as simple as the Jerusalem Declaration makes out," the Christian Zionists' statement said.

Some Christian Zionists believe that the return of the Jews to the Holy Land will bring about the end of the world and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Some also believe Jews themselves will have to become Christians or perish.

The Christian Zionist groups in Jerusalem said they had no "thirst for Armageddon" and do not base their theological position on "end time prophecy." They called for dialogue with the clerics behind the declaration that condemned them.

Christian Zionism is strongest in the United States, where support is much higher than in Europe or other parts of the world for Israel in its conflicts with the Palestinians and in its recent war with Hizbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

James Rudin, senior advisor on inter-religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee in New York, said there are "millions and millions of American Christians" who support Israel but who do not consider themselves Zionists.

He said they represent a core of support far larger than those who base their backing of Israel on the Bible.

Daughter of Lebanon, will you answer two questions for me?

1) Do you believe Jesus Christ is the Messiah, literally "God Incarnate" and not just a great prophet?

2) Will you say to us "Mohammed never was a prophet of God"?

I find your one-sided obsession with Jews most curious.

Thank you.

Re: Jerusalem Christian Patriarchs Reject Christian Zionist Doctrines As False Teaching That Corrupts Biblical Message of Love, Justice And Reconciliation

Thank you.

Jesus was the son of God sent to earth to die for our sins.

I will wait and ask Jesus if Muhammed was a Prophet when he returns.
All of Lebanon will be liberated including Shebba Farms, along with Golan, and the West Bank, and Gaza.

Then Israel can have peace.

Dol
You claim to be christian yet seem to foment hate and discord. I have yet to see one christian thought from your rants. Your adgenda is becoming visable. If you think the christians are leaving the area because of "Jewish" occupation you are as deluded as you are a fool.

Jerusalem is under Israeli control. The Palestinians they are driving out includes the ancient Christian populations.

Israel is Anti-Christian.

Zionists are Anti-Christian.

Who are you trying to convince, us, ...or *yourself*?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 100653

Just as Jerusalem is dear to us Christians, however, I recognize that it is also dear to Jews and to Muslims. For this reason it holds the possibility for the creation of both conflict and harmony, estrangement but also reconciliation. The Palestinian Christians have lived in Jerusalem since the time of the early Church. They are composed of four families of Churches, namely. Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Catholic and the Evangelicals. At one time Christians comprised 15% of the population. Due to the unstable political situation, the Israeli closure of Jerusalem, confiscation of Palestinian residency permits, the building of settlements and the absence of economic and cultural opportunities, however, the Christian population of Jerusalem has been drastically reduced. Out of a population of 27,000 in 1967, there are now only approximately 8,000 Christians in the city. If this trend continues, our Churches will become museums. The very city that witnessed the birth of Christianity will have become a place devoid of a viable Christian presence.

Church leader accuses Israel of ‘ethnic cleansing’ of Palestinians

by Stephen Brown
Ecumenical News International

GENEVA — A Palestinian church leader has accused Israel of practicing "ethnic cleansing" against Palestinians, and has called for solidarity from Christians and churches around the world.

Archimandrite Theodosios Hanna, of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, told a public briefing yesterday (19 October) at the Geneva headquarters of the World Council of Churches (WCC) that Palestinian Christians "are suffering, because they are Palestinians and they want to stay in their homeland in Palestine".

Archimandrite Theodosios was representing Patriarch Diodoros, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, as part of a Palestinian ecumenical delegation invited by the WCC to Geneva where the United Nations Commission on Human Rights met this week to consider the Middle East crisis.

The delegation also included Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal, of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, and Dr Marwan Bishara, a Nazareth journalist who is a research fellow at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. (The delegation was accompanied by Georges Tsetsis, a member of the WCC’s central and executive committees, and former representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the WCC’s headquarters.)

Three other Palestinian Christians who were invited were unable to come to Geneva because of Israeli military’s closure of Palestinian territories.

Speaking through an interpreter, Archimandrite Theodosios said: "Israel is practicing ethnic cleansing against the Arabs, Muslim and Christian. Everyone thinks that there is a conflict between Arabs and Israelis. It is not a conflict between Arabs and Israelis, but an occupation by Israel."

Calling on churches to hold special prayers on Sunday, October 22, for the Palestinian people, Archimandrite Theodosios said: "We are asking all the churches in the World Council of Churches to make visible the pain and suffering of the Palestinian people and to support the Palestinian people in the struggle for a just peace that guarantees all their rights."

He added: "This Palestinian people should be enjoying all the rights of any other nation ... and should be enjoying their independence in their own state, the capital of which is Jerusalem."

In a written statement to the human rights commission, the WCC’s Commission of the Churches on International Affairs said that events following the "provocative visit [of the Israeli opposition leader, Ariel Sharon] to Al-Haram Al-Sharif have again shown that the consequence of this repeated defiance [by Israel] of international law, of continuing systematic violations of human rights ... has been to incite to violence and to deny peace and security to both peoples".

Interviewed yesterday by ENI, Dr Bishara warned that the peace process initiated by the 1993 Oslo accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation had run its course.

"Forget Oslo. Oslo is dead," he told ENI. "The peace process in the last seven years hasn’t delivered to goods for the Palestinians ... a better standard of living, access to education, access to health, access to the job market.

"None of that has improved in the last seven years. In fact, according to World Bank figures and data, unemployment has risen, GDP [Gross Domestic Product] has fallen."

The recent "excessive use of lethal force" — Israel’s response to riots — had turned the expression of Palestinian frustration "into a much wider confrontation, engulfing not only Palestinians in the occupied territories, but also Palestinians inside Israel".

The idea of a peace process as a slow, cumulative process "no longer works", Dr Bishara told ENI. "It is now essential for the parties to move towards physical, geographic, but, most importantly, legal separation between two sovereign, independent states. This is the only way we can stop the violence."

The declaration of Palestinian statehood, he said, would be "a first step for the strengthening of Palestinian society and to allow Palestine to negotiate with Israel on a list of issues, without being on the other side of an Israeli [gun] barrel".

Dr Bishara, who is a Roman Catholic, stressed that the conflict was not a religious conflict between Jews and Muslims, "but a racist and colonial conflict touching Christian communities as well as Muslim communities".

Describing comments from members of the ecumenical delegation, he said: "They made it clear that Israeli bullets did not, do not and will not distinguish between Palestinian Christians and Palestinian Muslims ... Crimes against Palestinians are also crimes against Christians."
