- Senate Republicans had planned to propose spending cuts and reforms to Amtrak this week, but after the derailment on Tuesday that killed at least seven people, the announcement of the proposal is on hold, Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., told International Business Times.

“We were going to roll something out this week, and I think now is a time to be respectful of the families and maybe I’ll talk about policy going forward,” said Wicker, a member of the Senate Committee on Science, Commerce and Transportation, which oversees Amtrak. “But clearly we will not be rolling anything out today.”

Established by the government as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Amtrak is government-owned and exists thanks to more than $1 billion in federal funding every year. It also receives assistance from a number of states for operating rails within their borders. So while it’s not a traditional government agency, it is subject to the same oversight and control as a federal entity would be. For example, last year Congress capped the amount of overtime an Amtrak employee can receive and criticized food service losses.

It would be a great time to talk about cutting funding 100% and privatizing Amtrak. It is just a perennially subsidized rat hole to prop up union workers and pensions. Costs more and more every year, prices go up services go down. Now they have some drug-addled, mentally ill fag with barely any experience racing around corners at 1000mph killing a bunch of people. Another excellent example of government / libtard fail that should be exploited by Republicans,instead of the cowardly shits running away from it. The Dems will simply use the disaster to milk EVEN MORE money out of the taxpayer. They will have no problem at all exploiting this tragedy.

Trains are not something to be hated. They are a part of the normal infrastructure in first world economies.

Investing in rail lines, and modern passenger cars, helps the economy because it helps commerce. It also helps people.

What we are doing is wasting trillions upon trillions in the foreign wars that does nothing but stifle the economy and it does not help people, it hurts people.

But of course we have unlimited money for war, but no money for a modern train system.

Do the freeways make a profit? It's public transportation! Invest in it. It is like clean water, it is a basic need of the people...

America is becoming an embarrassing place to call home.

Amtrak COULD be run efficiently in private hands. It was taken over by the gov't. and subsidized in the mid 70's. The people responsible at the time actually admitted that it was only saved to prop up union rail workers, not to transport passengers. It shouldn't cost over $2 billion / year to run a small railroad line. Most of that budget goes to union pensions, political cronies and graft.

I find it extremely coincidental that this accident occurred only 1 week before proposed funding cuts were to be discussed. I knew it was "Over The Top" when the liberal talking heads on MSM were talking about infrastructure spending on the SAME DAY of the accident. Some didn't even have the respect to offer their condolences for the families of the victims. The friggen bodies weren't even cold yet and they are going on and on about more money like the typical cackling liberal whores that they are.

Highways!!

Only the rich travel ... and they can afford to pay the full price for their travels and take the burden off of the Taxpayers. The Taxpayers should NOT be subsidizing the rich, and besides the private sector can be more efficient at it.

In addition to the Railroads ...

ALL ROADS SHOULD BE TOLL ROADS!! including the local roads in all towns and cities. With modern technology it is easy to charge people for traveling on them by putting sensors every block in the cities, every mile in the country, and at every bridge or culvert in the city or country (ala what PrePass does now in selected areas). Everybody pays for each and every trip taken, including to the grocery store, and the money goes to whoever owns, builds and/or maintains the roads and bridges.

All roads, even local roads also SHOULD BE SOLD OFF to private owners and Governments at ALL levels should be banned from owning or maintaining any road, highway, bridge, or culvert.

Ditto with Airports and the Air Traffic Control System.

ALL airports should be required to be sold off and all governments at all levels banned from owning or financing ANY airport. Private Industry would make a financial decision as to whether to keep any particular airport open, and if there is enough demand for landings to pay the costs then it will stay open. If not then is SHOULD CLOSE and the land sold off for development.

The Air Traffic Control System should be a "USER PAYS" system on a per flight basis. It takes the same amount of resources to guide a small private jet as a big commercial airliner ... so the prices for both of those should BE THE SAME. The average traveler who flies via the airlines should NOT be paying extra so that some corporation can get an almost freebie for it's Corporate Jet (or a Doctor for his Beechcraft Bonanza).

Waterways should also have user fees. If you want to use your powerboat on a lake ... NO FREEBIES anymore. Pay the private owner of the lake, or in the case of rivers or the great lakes, the concessionair for that part of the waterway, for the right to travel through it or on it.

It is time to privatize all these "extras" that basically are subsidies for the rich and make those people PAY for their use of the resources.

Right - you have to take the train hater's argument to the logical conclusion that their argument leads to. Every road should be privatized, then. Winner take all. Everybody just gets screwed trying to get from point A to Point B just to go to work.

This idea of hating trains has been advanced in the last 15 years by the Republican party. I have no idea what in the fuck they are talking about anymore.

If America spent just a fraction of its foreign war budget on its rail infrastructure it could have a rail system that would surpass France, China or Japan.

China was stuck in the Steam age two decades ago and look at them now.




But no America prefers to spend its budget on War machines and War Trains instead and let its passenger rail system crumble into the ground.
