Scientists discover whole new state of matter!!

"Most people are familiar with some of the common states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. Scientists also recognize a fourth state of matter — plasma — that is commonly observable here on Earth, as well as a host of other states that can only be created in the lab, such as Bose–Einstein condensates and neutron-degenerate matter. Jahn-Teller metals can now be added to this list, a state which appears to have the properties of an insulator, superconductor, metal and magnet all wrapped into one.
 
It's the material's superconductivity which might be the most interesting trait, however. It has the potential to achieve superconductivity at a relatively high critical temperature ("high" as in -135 degrees Celsius as opposed to the sub -243.2 degrees Celsius required by many ordinary metallic superconductors), which is significant for the science of superconductivity. Superconductors conduct electricity without resistance, so they have the potential to revolutionize how we use and produce energy. But these technologies become far more feasible if developed using high-temperature superconductivity."

Jahn-Teller is from 1937!!!! It's not exactly HOT (Pun intended) NEWS for pete's sake!!!!!
And it evolves from Heike Kamerlingh 1911 discoverie of superconductivity!! Without all of those discoveries you could forget about M.R.I. as an example!!!

Sounds like a good material of an Ion engine, or that wrap drive NASA is working on, specially in Space.

It's all reverse engineering.

Very interesting KipKat, 5* Not only is it a new state of matter but it *may* lead to breakthroughs in high temperature superconductors. If we ever get to the point when we have room temperature superconductors it will radically change the world. Interesting website too!

I find it amazing how much we still don't know and how slowly we are progressing. All these supposedly brilliant people not really producing anything new. Best we do is find new ways to use old discoveries.

I too have discovered a new form of matter....called nothing.

As absurd as it seems at first, consider how important 0 (zero) is too math.

When 1 atom is introduced, we can have a solid, liquid AND gas. When we have two atoms, we can have either a solid or a liquid-gas state. When we have three atoms we could have any state as we know it, solid, liquid or gas (as well as plasma and nothing)

When we have no atoms, we have a strange state of existence. The bonding of the circle.

Imagine if all creation was 100% coal. Then the new vacuum of space IS coal.

There is a known force of space from the massive vacuum. Nothing as a state of matter is as real as zero is to the number 1 and on.

Well maybe to you but I learned about it over 10 years ago in 7th grade science class. It's called fire. Fire is plasma.

I discovered one myself.

It is my 17 year old son. His matter has normal potential but it remains in a continuous stasis form and only becomes active if eating or playing call of duty.

We're on the cusp of greatness. We're also on the cusp of blowing ourselves up. Pretty sure this has happened before.

The next Einstein is probably working in a Swiss patent office, ripping off new ideas from smart people.

We can't even think about quantum physic correctly ("shut up and calculate.") Science would progress so much faster without the old fuddy duddy's who are always attached to their old, outdated theories and constantly hinder generation after generation...

I think we can have exceptional rigor in science without the added dogma.

On the other hand, politic$ must stay out of science because being a "denier" or "hater" matters if you are using rigorous evaluative criteria and there is a damn good reason for skepticism - like fiddling with the data, incomplete data, poor methodology, ignoring the findings you don't like or downplaying them, incomplete modelling, pisspoor apriori theories, etc... ...(think AWG, for example.)

Also, publication bias (think dynasties) continues to be a huge problem. It's not what you wrote - it's who wrote it with you that often matters.

The problem is that theory, for the most part, has gone so far beyond what experimentalists can achieve that you cannot prove anything until experimental physics catches up in tech. One of the biggest experimental tests run recently has shown that quantum entanglement is a real "phenomenon". Quantum entanglement will allow for a slew of new technologies, especially in the realm of instant communication and lag free data transfer over unlimited distances. Still, showing that something is no longer just theory does not allow for the tech to be rapidly deployed - such things take years, sometimes decades.

The problem here is also one of exposure. The vast, vast majority of human beings in this day and age dont care and therefore do not understand the sciences. They just care that their TVs have better image quality, or that their consoles and computers can make better eye candy, or that they have the latest and most expensive smart phones. They want the toys of technology without caring for why that technology works. So what ends up happening is that you have a tiny fraction of the human population creating new tech and paving the way into the future for the majority of the dumbass masses. And what do they get for it? Corporate enslavement, being called names (geeks and nerds), or government enslavement. These people should be heralded at the level of rockstars and pro sports athletes, but no one cares about them.

And if it wasnt for them, we would still be using rocks to break open nuts in a cave somewhere in the wilds. There was always a first originator to everything. The first tools, the first hunting weapons... The first quantum entanglement phone - so you can have lag free communications from Earth to Mars or beyond.

They are not paving the way for anything other than extreme cowardice ...
