Monday, September 4, 2006 (Kabul):
In a major operation on Sunday, NATO and Afghan forces killed more than 200 Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan.
Four soldiers of the NATO-led peacekeeping force were also killed and seven others wounded in the fighting.
Some 80 suspected Taliban fighters were arrested, while over a 100 managed to flee the area.
About 2,000 NATO and Afghan soldiers are involved in Operation Medusa, which is the biggest military operation in southern Afghanistan since the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) took over the area from a US-led coalition at the end of July.
"The last two days we have been fighting the Taliban, there are several Taliban killed and no causalities in our forces and NATO," said Mohammed Naby, Afghan soldier.
On Saturday, a British plane crashed killing all 14 British troops on board. NATO dismissed hostile fire as the cause.
NATO forces took command of security in Afghanistan's volatile southern provinces from a US-led coalition in August, amid an upsurge in attacks by Taliban-led fighters.
For the past four months, hundreds of people have been killed in clashes between the Taliban and the international forces.
