The significance of the 8.5 quake in the Bonin Island region of Japan would be the same if there was an 8.5 earthquake offshore of Eureka California. An earthquake of that size would immediately destabilize the Casacadia Subduction Zone to the north.

I fully expect an 8.2ish magnitude earthquake offshore of Eureka California just prior to a big subduction earthquake along the Oregon/Washington coast.
In the same way I am looking for an 8.0ish earthquake in the Bonin Island region south of Tokyo that will be the final trigger that unleashes a subduction earthquake that shakes Tokyo into the ground.

To put this into perspective for Californians... what just happened in Japan would be similar to an 8.2 earthquake ( WITH NO AFTERSHOCKS )off the coast of Eureka California.
AN 8.2 earthquake off the coast of Eureka California, with no aftershocks, would have immediate consequences and would be the final warning to flee the coast!
