I read the book that movie was based on back in the 90s and even though it was co-written by a crazy person the actual non-fiction parts of it made a hell of a lot of sense (it had a theoretical scenario that played out little by little in between the science stuff.) I have never really been sure about *what they tell us about* global warming/climate change but I have always been sure there is absolutely something to it and its just kept in controversy for political reasons. That book has ALWAYS remained in my mind....I would not be surprised in the least if something like that did happen some day. IIRC, it was the North Atlantic Current changing that got it all started - and anyone looking at the jet stream craziness who also read that book would justifyingly be a bit concerned...

Indeed, the stream/current is a very delicate system. If they manage to wreck it with some sort of geo engineering/haarp combo soup, it could trigger a 'climate abyss' as the French Foreign Minister described it.

One thing for sure, doom always comes in the least likely situation. Maybe this time we get frozen while waiting for sundoom and asteroidoom, and beg for an EQ doom to break the ice around us.
