I think you're referring to a Pell Grant. These do not need to be re-paid far as I know but are typically minimal in size.

College is for specialists, good in that area of study, but like most are helpless away from that specific job.

My neighbor just told me after his son graduates from college next year, it will have cost him $125,000. Guess what degree he got?.... Wait for it....

It worked for me I the 90s. Got a degree in chemistry never would have enough capital stuff to use those instruments . I paid off 30 k loans for ten years sucked . But at least I have a trade school

Agreed. Go to trade school and learn how to fix cars, do electrical work or carpentry. Skills that will always be useful and pay well. Go to college of you want to be a doctor, dentist or lawyer. Great pay if you can do the job and still live with yourself.

College debt exceeds credit card debt nationwide, and credit card debt is spread out over more people so the average debt there is far less than the average student loan debt.

don't go to college. Leg her work at walmart for 10 bucks an hour. If she had a 4 year degree she would make twice that at least for half the work. Our system rewards a college degree. Yes for a few einstein it is not necesssry

It's about squaring the circle, turning you into a left-brained idiot with little to no critical thinking skills. It is to turn you into a "logical" person, with that logic deriving from what they teach you, not necessarily the truth of things.

just to give the other side here, i went to college in the late sixties and seventies, and am 10 years into retirement

i did not use loans, i worked full time, and it took me 6 years to get a B.A.

i worked my way up to Divisional Sales Mgr of a Fortune 100 company, i was responsible for 1500 sales people and 150 million in yearly sales.

where do you think all the big, easy money is these days? what are you going to do, be a professional like a doctor and go to school until you're 33 years old? great

corporate captains have perks you can't even believe....stock options, expense accounts, bonuses, new BMW's every two years, and you da boss. you could not possibly be considered for something like this unless you have that piece of paper. 10 years after the BA, i got an MBA.

i agree that you shouldn't use loans, getting saddled with debt will prevent you moving to new opportunities.

The clerk at the corner market that I frequent has a BA (or phd, forgot which) in engineering and mining technology.
Fresh out of college and in debt for life unless he lands that job with the oil company the college promised him.

He's not alone. Here's a fellow who also got a degree in journalism. And he went back for his master's in Environmental Law. He now runs a hostel, for which he never got any training to learn how to do it and be successful at it. I could get your clerk with science degree a job . So few in all generations know any science

I've hired a few college taught "graphic designers". It would usually take them a half hour to design single color "For Sale" signs and it would have 3 layers.. and god forbid you ask them to help take out the trash or help in production. It was like a grew a dick out of my head...they were astonished. One actually laughed...at me. The owner.

you have to keep updating your skills as well. a lot of people think that now they have a job, nothing more to do than show up for work everyday. college is just the beginning.

engineering technology is not engineering.

If the degree were in engineering he would be employed in the field.

The definition of engineering is using one's brain power and skills to create and/or maintain something. Some betelnut chewing native in the south pacific is certainly engineering weaved baskets made of palm fronds. Won't be making any money - but is engineering.

Mining is really bad area to go into right now because the powers that be are pushing prices of the commodity mined so low (iron, bauxite, copper, oil, nat gas, silver, gold, whatever) that almost ALL miners are losing money. They aren't hiring.
