Game of Thones doesn't tell you who you must side with. ALl factions are fucked up. You may as well side with the religious fanatics if you wish, no one is telling you whom to like. It's not like hollywood movies that make the gay or the black guy the hero so that people will accept them and socially engineer them in the process. There's no heroes and villains in this story.

Fiction is not supposed to deliver morality stories. As an avid reader of fiction, I deeply detest any attempts to deliver moral values or judgements in fiction. It's clumsy and vulgar, and typical of new, incompetent or lazy writers. Preaching is the cardinal sin of writing - it's even worse than being boring.

It's the author's job to tell the story of his/her fictional world as it is and let the reader to be the judge of the characters, events and meaning of the story. The world of Game of Thrones is a nasty world, but it's not that different from ours. Incest, rape, death, murder, maiming, torture, lying and manipulation is the stock our world is made of. When an author creates a world and characters, it doesn't mean he advocates or cheers for the evil things that happen in it. He's telling a friggin' story without taking sides.

But I can see why so many people can't understand it. Many expect the author to always preach or promote an agenda. They expect an author to condemn and punish the "evil" characters and save and reward the "good" characters, because that's a morally acceptable agenda. Now, if you take that as a starting point, then it's more easy to understand why rampant evil going unpunished in a book is seen as the author promoting evil. He's not. A good author is not promoting anything - good or bad. He's just telling a story with evil people and nasty events in it.

The reason why I love GoT and, for instance, novels by James Ellroy is that those worlds are not morally black and white. For instance, Ellroy's borderline psychotic and power hungry thugs, shakedown kings, cops and politicians are complex, human-like characters. They are capable of utter moral degeneration and atrocities, but also show loyalty, love and sacrifice. The reader may not approve of what they do, but he can understand why they do what they do. That makes them living, multidimensional characters that one can enjoy on both intellectual and emotional level. That's the author's main job: to create a believable world with fully human characters (with human flaws, strengths, quirks and moral ambiguities we all have) and follow their story arc to the end.

Exactly. Most people are used to having a hero and a villain and when they don't they feel utterly lost. This is the problem with most of humanity, dual, binary, limited thinking. People always think in clearcut bipolar extremes, and that's why it's easy to manipulate them. Most people are confused about GOT because right now, who is really the hero? Who should they root for?
MAny people were rooting for Stannis because he seemed like a good guy, but then he kills his daughter. Jon Snow may seem like a good guy but not by Olly he is not, for Olly and those who think like him he's a traitor. Tyrion is likeable and a badass character, but we must remember that he killed his father and basically doomed his family, and even now he's planning to help Danaerys who is supposed to the take the throne from the Lannisters. Good guy? I don't know. Danaerys herself has not proven to be more than a confused woman who knows she wants to reclaim the throne and destroy the system that there is in Westeros, but can she create something better? so far the city she rules is undergoing a civil war. If she can't control one city how can she control Westeros? Probably through tyranny and violent conquest (e.g, burning all her enemies with her dragons).

People thus recur to siding with whom they consider victims, that's why after wanting Cersei's head for a long time many people now are feeling bad for her walk of shame, this creates a ton of cognitive dissonance in people who start wondering why the fuck they feel the way they feel. This is what makes it such a great story, how it fucks with people's heads. I just hope they don't start resurrecting dead characters, that'd cheapen the whole thing and make it almost unbearable to me.
