Epic Beard Guy User ID: 69151844 United States 06/15/2015 08:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How bad would their business model have to be to lose money in today's gun market? Contrary to some of the posts here, Colt has always made a quality gun. They started with the revolver, but over the years, they have made some of the best pistols and rifles available. One of my kids is a 1911 collector, and the new Colt is his favorite. I have a couple of Colt rifles, and the quality is unmatched. I hope they get this straightened out, I would hate to see Colt go away. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69451844 United States 06/15/2015 09:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Colt has been horribly mismanaged over the years and relied on government contracts for far too long. They became stagnant and overpriced with their products and there are plenty of other American gun makers that offer more quality for your dollar. I don't think it will get better or change until they leave Connecticut and get new management. Colt has a long history of shooting itself in the foot, especially when it comes to the ar15. The reason all our allies use ar18 clones for the most part is because Colt blew opportunity after opportunity to supply our allies with ar15 style rifles. Japan and South Korea are perfect examples, they both wanted ar15 style rifles but colt wanted a fortune for them so they instead made ar18 clones. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69505729 United States 06/15/2015 10:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good, fuck Colt. They've become stale. They've done nothing to stand out from the herd and/or justify their overpriced firearms. They've been getting by on their name for too long. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19437385 You right wing shit heads are ruthless assholes who eat your own. If that company goes under the town of west Hartford will dry up and die. Connecticut workers are being brutalized by the corrupt Malloy ragime. Do you right wing assholes care? No. All you care about is your precious 10Th AR-15 you'll never even shoot. You can build an ar now for under 500 bucks. They are the new sks. I'd rather pay a G for one and help support the workers there.... Well by all means, get fucking busy and spend your money |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69496378 United States 06/15/2015 10:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's probably one of the reasons they're having problems. For example, why buy a Colt 1911 when you can get a 1911 for half the price from another manufacturer? Colt needs to have some discount offerings to lure new buyers. Once you gain brand loyalty, that person is more likely to buy your more expensive offerings. Your average Joe doesn't want to spend 1 or 2 K on a gun - especially his first gun. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69451450 United States 06/15/2015 10:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I love guns, but I've never seriously considered purchasing a colt besides an old government 1911. They're way over priced and besides their 1911 and M4 (there are a plethora of other manufacturers in those arenas) Colt doesn't really have anything that appeals to me. I hate to say it, but Smith & Wesson has been about the same for a long time. Ruger on the other hand is a kick ass company. They make the finest auto loading .22 rifles and hand guns, the infamous mini 14, a bad ass single shot rifle, and formerly the autoloading .44 carbine which I'm on the hunt for. Remington is another awesome US manufacturer with their 700 actions. |

Looks like they got caught cooking the books. They were probably running on the "Lean" philosophy and when the creditors shut off the financing they had no cushion to operate on. There is no way in hell a major firearm manufacturer could not make it during the last 6 years of of panic buying unless the people running the show are idiots. |

Colt's Manufacturing Company - according to an article on Maine Antique Digest: In 1994 Colt's Manufacturing Company was purchased by Zilkha & Company of New York City for $12 million. Donald Zilkha, then 42, was and remains company president. Three years after buying Colt, he unsuccessfully tried to buy FN Herstal, as mentioned above, for $82 million. It would have given him control of Winchester, Browning, and Colt. Where did this young guy get that kind of money? He was born right. He is the son of Azouri "Ezra" Zilkha, "a scion of a Babylonian Jewish banking family," according to a 2001 article in Traders Magazine. The New York Times in 1999 described the Zilkha family as "one of Iraq's richest banking dynasties." The family left Iraq after the Second World War and successfully reestablished itself in the U.S. The family patriarch, Khedouri (or Khadouri) Zilkha (1884-1956), launched banks throughout the Middle East. His son Ezra, now 82, self-published his memoir in the 1999 book From Baghdad to Boardrooms: My Family's Odyssey. It's available in some used bookstores. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 8799576 United States 06/15/2015 03:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Gun maker Colt Defense LLC plans to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by Monday, according to people familiar with the matter, amid business and accounting troubles. Quoting: grumpier The company has secured financing to continue operating while in bankruptcy and expects to remain in business after the restructuring, the people said. The West Hartford, Conn.-based company, with a legacy dating to 17th century New England, developed a pistol it calls “the gun that won the West” and enjoyed a lucrative stretch in the late 1990s and early 2000s as the U.S. military’s sole supplier of the M4 line of firearms widely used by front-line troops. But Colt has struggled in recent years with a slowdown in rifle sales and its 2013 loss of a key contract to supply the U.S. Army with the M4. The company has had accounting problems that caused it to revise prior years’ reported financial results and miss a creditor’s initial filing deadline for an annual report, according to regulatory filings. Colt plans to try to reduce its debt burden via a court-supervised auction of its business, to generate proceeds to repay some of its lenders, the people familiar with the plans said. [link to www.thefirearmblog.com] Even with the loss of the government contract, how in the speckled shiny fuck is an American gun maker in bankruptcy in pre-Jade-Helm-Annie-Grab-Your-Gun 2015? You have to be HORRIBLE at business to not be making money hand over fist in the middle of this circus... cookin' the books pocketing it the crooks |
