CNN anchor Frederika Whitfield called the actions of the gunman in Dallas with pipe- bombs in the armored vehicle who rammed a police cruiser and fired shots into the DPD HQ, "brave" and "courageous".
Because our society is so knee-jerk and based on "emotion", people flew off the handle at both statements.
In fact, both statements are true. Let's look at the dictionary definition of both words...
BRAVE...
*adjective: ready to face and endure danger or pain; showing courage.
COURAGEOUS...
*adjective: not deterred by danger or pain; brave.
As we see, both of the individuals used the words appropriately. But because in the U.S. today, symbolism trumps substance (as many neocons' idol Rush Limbaugh likes to say), Bill Maher and Frederika Whitfield are punished for the ignorance of much of the American public.
Integrity or otherwise having a "good" or "rah-rah" patriotic fervor have nothing to do with the definition of the words "brave" or "courageous".
"In times of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." -- Orwell.
Enough stupid people beget a stupid country. Is that what we have now? You be the judge. |

Doesn't matter if one agrees with Maher's or Whitfield's politics. Words mean things (another Limbaugh-ism), and both people used the words correctly.
But I guess if there are enough stupid people to make a fuss (even if they're wrong), the loud voices "become correct".
Ah, this brave, new world in which we live. |

We all know there were no 9/11 hijackers.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69330156 That's irrelevant to the topic at hand, but I hear ya. The firing of one man and the castigation of one woman for using the words "brave" and "courageous" correctly. Last Edited by Mark Spitz, Phelps Swallows on 06/16/2015 01:54 AM |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65956315 One could make that argument, sure. But my point is that Maher shouldn't have lost his job for it, nor Frederika castigated for it. They used the words correctly, after all. The problem is Americans have been conditioned to think "brave" and "courageous" are only reserved for American "heroes" like cops, firemen, and military, which is not exclusively accurate for the dictionary definitions of these words. It does apply to those people, but it applies to others, also. It doesn't necessarily have a positive connotation, despite what some ignoramuses want to think. He used the word correctly, as did the CNN anchor. |

It depends on the context. Courage doesnt exist in an empty space. In the context of killing and endagering innocent humans the acts described are cowardice. In the context of seeing it from the view of the person it might appear curageous to them. |
