Early 20th century the word Gay was used by those who disliked homosexuals as a derogatory term.

By the 1960's, Gay had been adopted by the gays as their own.

They tried it with the word Queer, but it didn't take hold. The other derogatory words have been tried as well.

Its the same reason why black people call each other 'n****r' - its owning the word and taking the sting out of it.

The word Homosexual was first used in the 19th century. Prior to that there was no single word used to describe what we call 'gay' men.

Since the word Homosexual didn't exist until the 19th century, how do you suppose then that a book reputed to be at least 2000 years old has it in it today? Hmmmm
