Little Penguin User ID: 37999552 United States 06/24/2015 11:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Of course, GM could set up an autocorrect so that anyone who wrote "brain" or "moron" would ALWAYS be posting with the GLP-approved spellings. I'm amazed that there aren't more misunderstandings due to the bad spelling and lack of punctuation! Even though I have a good grasp of English, sometimes I have to read through something two or three times before being able to figure out where the commas, periods, quotation marks, etc. should have been and what a poster (probably) means. It's like following a driving manual: the rules are there so we can all get along on the road, and it can get very messy when someone doesn't. IMO, the all-time best book title is "Eats, Shoots & Leaves: Why, Commas Really Do Make a Difference!" Overgoverned User ID: 69567048 United States 06/24/2015 12:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I can't recall ever having seen "and" described as a preposition. Pretty sure it's called a conjunction, which makes OP's subject plural, necessitating a plural predicate. Hamfisted use of language does dilute the impact of a person's statements. Even if they're valid and insightful statements, I have to think "this dude is a gibbering idiot who somehow came up with a coherent thought (but was unable to express it in anything close to English). What's that saying about monkeys and typewriters . . . ?" |

Therefore, it would be "Spelling and grammar matters." Good day. I hate getting into these discussions, but this one's sticking in my craw. "Spelling and grammar" is a compound subject, so is treated as singular. For those of us who can no longer quote chapter and verse regarding correct usage, there's the "replacement" test. If you were to replace "spelling and grammar" with "they", you get "they matter", which is clearly correct (over "they matters," which gives me the willies just saying it.) Your opinion ("it") matters. On our team, Doug and Shelly ("they") matter. All lives ("they") matter. Joey's life ("it") matters. <-------- because, as it's been pointed out, when you end any post with this, it's all good. Really? That's interesting. Is it treated as "singular?" That part of your post is confusing. I'm OP, I switched bars. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 68743712 United States 06/24/2015 01:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I make as many errors as anyone here, but I am getting sick of it. I am embarassed of my grammatical and spelling errors. This is a great forum. It would be nice if we could try harder to keep the content clean of errors. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69597740 The errors are very discrediting to otherwise great content. People come here from Google, etc. The better the content, the more legitimate we will seem, and the more users we will attract. I know we can't be perfect, but consider hitting the "preview" button. It takes 10 seconds to proof your post, and makes your messaging much more effective. A spellcheck option would be very nice. Tahnks ;-) Wouldn't it be sweet if posters ran the "subject header" through spell check? First impressions and all... |

That part of your post is confusing. I'm OP, I switched bars. Uh-huh, because of the compound thing. I wish that I could give a specific explanation, and I'm sure that there are some on here who can, but that "replacement" test will almost always answer any doubts. Loyalty ("it") matters. Loyalty and bravery ("they") matter. See, this is why I don't like to get into this stuff. All I really have are examples; it would take me too much time to go digging around on grammar sites, looking for the correct explanation. Plus, you know GLP: "link or it didn't happen." If I want to be a proper grammar nazi, I really need to find a good site to bookmark and study! "Expecting DOOM since 1999." |
