Arrival is expected tonight at 7pm EDT Huge solar storm poses threat to power grid and GPS That said; a severe solar storm brings the potential to disrupt day-to-day life, and according to The Weather Network's Scott Sutherland: Solar flares are beautiful, mesmerizing and spectacular to behold, and their interaction with Earth's magnetic field can set off awe-inspiring displays of the Northern and Southern Lights. They're also frightening, as they can easily dwarf the size of our homeworld, and they're dangerous, because the interaction of powerful flares with Earth's magnetic field can set off strong geomagnetic storms that can cause damage to satellites, as well as radio blackouts and even power blackouts on the ground. Although avoiding one of these powerful flares would be next to impossible, knowing more about them can give us the ability to predict the worst potential effects from them, and protect our vulnerable technologies from being damaged. Arrival is expected tonight at 7pm EDT Power grids across North America and Europe have been on high alert all week as two massive solar storms have battered Earth, threatening to disrupt electricity supplies to millions of homes and businesses. On Monday, PJM Interconnection, which coordinates power to 61 million people across 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, alerted generators and transmission companies as the first storm was upgraded from "strong" to "severe" by the U.S. government's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado. Controllers across the United States and Canada have been issuing similar warnings and preparing to stabilize their grids as unusually strong electromagnetic radiation emitted from the sun interacts with the Earth's own magnetic field and induces freak currents across the electricity transmission network. A second storm is set to peak around 23:00 GMT on Wednesday, when highly charged particles which erupted from the surface of the Sun on Monday are forecast to reach Earth, according to the SWPC. Grid controllers aim to prevent a repeat of the events of the night of March 13-14, 1989, when a geomagnetic storm induced severe currents on high voltage power lines near the U.S.-Canadian border and created a cascading failure which knocked out the entire Hydro-Quebec power grid in just 92 seconds. Arrival is expected tonight at 7pm EDT Solar storm: GPS and satellite systems could fail after Sun zaps Earth with mega radiation GPS services and electricity could be hit today after the sun blasted Earth with huge and dangerous levels of radiation. NASA and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Centre said a mid-level solar flare reached its peak at 8.23am on Tuesday, zapping Earth with dangerous levels of radiation. The fallout could mean possible disruption to satellite navigation and other essential services such as electrical and communication systems provided from above. Fortunately, the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protects us living on the surface, but the radiation can damage satellites in orbit as it judders through them. In the past 24 hours, solar activity peaked at ‘G4’ on the geomagnetic space weather scale provided by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Centre, it said. This has "the potential to knock out navigation satellites" for several hours, as well as "cause other satellites to temporarily malfunction." The high level of geomagnetic storm is rare and happens for approximately only 60 days out of every 4,015. MORE....
