Historic Civic Stadium In Eugene, Oregon Engulfed In Flames
"The historic Civic Stadium in Eugene, Oregon has been engulfed in flames.

Parts of the stadium grandstands have been burned away and a giant plume of smoke can be seen throughout the city, according to reports by local media.

Local police have said that nearby structures are at risk due to the blaze and have suggested that everyone within a two-block radius evacuate the area, the Register-Guard reported.

The stadium used to serve as the home of a Major League Baseball minor league team called the Eugene Emeralds between 1969-2009. It was listed as one of the ten oldest active minor league baseball buildings in the US and, in 2008, was included in the National Register of Historice Places."

What's interesting is the fact that this New Deal (Works Progress Administration) Project property was recently partially "sold" to new investors.

"The Eugene Civic Alliance acquired most of the property in a multi-part deal involving the Eugene School District, the city of Eugene and Market of Choice owner Rick Wright, the newspaper reported."

Though through the New Deal this property was for the community and never to be used for "private profit". There has been controversy surrounding the transfer of property.

A timely fire in my opinion.

There was another fire similar to this several years ago when a newspaper mogul wanted to build a new stadium but the people rejected the proposal in a referendum.

Sometimes you can't say no.
