MTHFR gene and Schizophrenia
[link to www.schizophreniaoptions.com]

Time to stock up on fat soluble B-vitamins.

The enzyme 5,10-Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) converts inactive folate to its active form, namely 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, or MethyFolate.

Many Schizophrenics have defective forms of this enzyme and as a result have low folate levels. The form of folate that crosses the blood-brain barrier is methyl-folate. Supplementation with methyl-folate seemed to relieve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

____________

"Many individuals with schizophrenia have deficits in metabolism related to methylation, a metabolic process involving carbon donation. This issues stem from multiple interrelated risk factors involving Cobalamine (B12), Folic Acid (Folate) and Pyridoxine (B6) and the enzymes that interact with these vitamins.

Specifically, low folate levels, high homocysteine levels, and poor folate activation genetics are common in schizophrenia, and these issues appear to confer significant increased risk for development and maintenance of the disorder. While these deficits occur for a variety of reasons, research has shown that supplementation can correct some aspects of this problem and directly improve symptoms in many individuals."

Re: MTHFR gene and Schizophrenia
It is important to note that FOLIC ACID is very toxic and blocks the receptors for folate which is the natural form and is essential for the body.

The government has mandated that FOLIC ACID is put in cereal, and breads-- another reason not to ever eat processed foods.

Many people have a MTHFR gene mutation which makes additional folate essential. (in the methyl form)

There are two main MTHFR genes that we currently know a bit about.

One is C677T, and the other is A1298C.

Since we all get two copies of each gene, one from Mom and one from Dad it is possible to inherit one, two or no copies of a gene mutation.

With MTHFR you could have no copies.

One copy of C677T

One copy of A1298C

Two copies of C677T

Two copies of A1298C

Two copies of C677T and one copy of A1298C

Two copies of A1298C and one copy of C677T

If one parent has no copies of the mutation a child can't get two copies.

No one can have two copies of both -- they would have never been born as that is too much damage to live.

Chances you or someone you love has one of these gene mutations. Having two copies, or three is much worse.

Help can be found with a good methyl folate supplement, and a good Dr, along with lots of research.
