If you cut at strategic locations, you can knock out all kinds of service. Had to replace lines asap because of something similar. The airport was affected as well as 911 services. You get a few guys that know where the hubs are...not good. Or a few guys with some hooks and cable cutters that got a hold of some blue prints...not good. Our arial lines are sooo very vulnerable. All those lines run down the pole, and all you have to do is unscrew the lag bolts to the cable guards...chop. Service out. I'm not surprised at all that this is occurring. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23061891 Just out of curiosity, when the lines are cut and then are spliced back together, is there any chance that an item or part that is used during the repair process that is hard to get? Basically, are they trying to use up part inventory so that when something major happens there will not be enough of those parts. In every operation, whether planning it or executing it, you can never count on luck; but you have to accept it, and recognize it when it’s there. -Major ******, U-2 Pilot/Instructor/Flight Commander |

The latest attack was discovered Tuesday morning in Livermore, California, joining other attacks dating back to July 6, 2014. [link to www.fbi.gov (secure)] ... FBI Special Agent Greg Wuthrich told USA Today [link to www.usatoday.com] that the attacks are “disturbing” and called for public assistance in reporting any suspicious activity. ... * June 8, 2015, 11:00 p.m. near Danville Blvd. and Rudgear Road in Alamo * June 8, 2015, 11:40 p.m. near Overacker Ave and Mowry Ave in Fremont * June 9, 2015, 1:38 p.m. near Jones Road and Parkside Dr. in Walnut Creek ... The FBI also stated that it does not believe these cases of vandalism are connected with the 2013 sniper attack [link to www.theblaze.com] on a PG&E’s Metcalf Transmission Substation. Ok.. looking at all of the information that I gathered from other Threads.... Here is the pattern. All this centers around the main arterial of the heart of California. From the 'practice' at the Power Station that was a rehearsal. To cutting the fiber optics cables. No one is thinking about Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that sits right there. You want to think about all of the things that Laboratory works on? Think about what could 'escape' from there. Basically, are they trying to use up part inventory so that when something major happens there will not be enough of those parts. To me, the problem would be the storage loops. Those tear drop loops you see mid span are there in case there is some damage done to a particular spot. They can take that slack out of those loops and feed it down to damaged area. If the line is cut on the out side on both sides of those loops, chances are, the whole fiber will have to be replaced and that takes some time. Just enough time though for people who have other nefarious plans that will coincide with such an action. Like a two pronged attack. Cut out communications, then coordinate another type of an attack to further the chaos. As far as splicing, it can take several hours, depending on the fiber count. But you can't splice if you don't have two ends that reach other to splice. I hope that answers your question. :) |

That was kinda of what I was afraid of. Not necessarily there being a lack of parts, but instead once the drop loops are used there is no "extra" fiber left in case there is a disruption somewhere along that particular fiber cable. End result is the same, wasting resources (by using the drop loops) until the entire fiber line needs to be replaced.
