Look at the direction the missile is traveling in this pic. it is nose down. It also confirms the attack did not come from the smaller vessel near by.

I was in my car and heard a report on NPR. Report claimed ISIL claimed responsibility. Report said ISIL claimed they killed every one onboard. You can clearly see survivors on the bow of the ship in the pic provided by the OP. ISIL also claimed it was a guided missile.

Another note, the ship was firing on ISIL. Meaning they were, most likely, in combat readiness (all quarters, battle stations, etc)

The missile got past the ships defenses. Practically all ships are trained in defense against anti-ship missiles.

Not perfect, even considering it was an antiquated ship.


But it got the ship with their eyes looking right at them. Not the biggest surprise attack, as it was return fire.
