They cannot fathom that trump would slip through the cracks. They recoil in horror that this is happening. They must have been assured that the status quo would be protected, just play your part and you'll reap the benefits.

They are so far detached from the rest of the people that they have no fuckin clue on how to think or respond. They are mortified that trump shoots from the hip and will drop a truth bomb and wreck their career with one statement. They assumed that everyone at their level was bound by some type of don't mention my indiscretions and I won't mention yours.

That's why when he approaches the fact that McCain was being prosecuted for high treason and was only pardoned because of Nixon, they are aghast.
