Mine was a TRS-80 Color Computer 2. Dad bought it for the family one Christmas with a bundle that included a Modem I and Videotex cartridge. Needless to say my brother and I quickly became addicted to CompuServe and at $6 an hour a Crack addiction would have been cheaper! Eventually we found BBSes but that brought a whole new set of problems. Later in life Dad actually told me he regretted buying the modem for a long time because of all the grief we caused him with it. That split second decision to blow a Christmas bonus on a home computer and drop it in the laps of two pre-teen 80's kids had consequences Dad could never had fathomed. I pretty much owe everything I have today to that little 64k computer from 1986 with a Motorola 6809 @ 1mhz hooked to a tv... |

I could spend all evening and part of the night typing in code to animate a 'bird' that looked like this ~o~ to fly randomly across the screen at an incredibly slow pace! It was SOOOOO worth it. Computers? That is what BIG companies had in special rooms with lots of air conditioning. There was no such thing as personal computers ... shoot there was no such thing as electronic calculators, they were all mechanical machines - either electric or with a pull lever. At home the highest tech we could reach in my town was a ROTARY dial phone, which if you needed to make a long distance call you could only make it by calling an "Operator" and having "her" (they were always female) place the call, AND a black and white television with 3 channels (ABC, NBC, CBS). Of course we also had TUBE radios to listen to music on the AM dial (transistor radios with crappy speakers if you wanted to listen while away from home ... even car radios used tubes) ... and nobody had ever heard of FM radio. In reality life was still great, maybe even better than today, though nobody had whole house air conditioning, maybe if you were lucky a room or two. Passenger trains still stopped in my small town, still steam powered with a coal boiler and a "fireman" who had to shovel coal in virtually nonstop as the train traveled. The interstate highway system was still being built ... so to go to the city one needed to get on the two lane roads and go through every little crossroads town and stop at every stoplight and stop sign ... which took forever, or so it seemed to me as a kid, though for my parents it was FAST compared to when they grew up. (quicker to go by train). The day "Pong" came along in a table top coffee table size machine ... wow we thought nirvana had arrived!! What high tech that was!! |

I still use my Pentium 1 12inch Toshiba Tecra that I bought in 1997. Its last venture online was in 2003 hooked up to RIT's dialup. I must admit I'm still addicted to the sound and feel of those old keyboards. |
