This is BS ... I've seen copperheads here..in montgomery county, and they are venemous Yep, me too. Got bit thru my leather boot by a small young one several years ago. Did not realize it until the next day; could not walk, foot swelled to a painful ugly size. Foot was not the same for well over a year. The baby copperhead seemed to have a higher concentration of venom. Ironically another nasty Texas pest has helped reduce the population of snakes on my property. Apparently they attack the snakes while they are underground as well. Fire ants will attack all stages of development of snakes, lizards, turtles and crocodiles. These animals are most vulnerable during and shortly after hatching. Caught in the rift between Deja Vu and Amnesia. Anonymous Coward User ID: 6544774 United States 07/24/2015 11:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ohh copperheads are not venomous, that's why our animals heads would balloon up after being bitten by them in the ozarks where I was raised. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43992210 Lol, we used to have a couple of dogs that would get bitten in the face about once a year. It didn't really hurt them and they'd be fine after a few days. Once you realized they weren't in any serious danger, it was hilarious, because it looked like someone had replaced their head with a football. |

Picture this, old single story 2 bedroom wooden home, no basement, sitting on wooden posts about 2 feet off the earth. The entire property infested with non poisonous snakes. The holes were literally everywhere. So my sister says to the female home owner, "Do your best to eliminate the snakes as it will scare away buyers". The next day she returns to hammer into the ground the For Sale sign. The ground is wet. She goes into the house to mention to the home owner that using the water hose to "drown out" the snakes just might work. Just as she is sitting down at the kitchen table the home owner says (I KID YOU NOT) "Oh it's not water from the hose, it's gasoline. My daughter is pouring it down each hole and we're going to smoke them out with a match!" A split second later there was a huge WHOMP sound and my sister and the home owner AND THE HOME ITSELF were tossed about 18" off the posts. The home was completely destroyed. Thank god nobody was hurt but the home had to be torn down. Yes, the little child did not get hurt either as the match was lit from the edge of the property. Of course I would not joke if somebody was hurt. Single parent, and she seriously did not know of the dangers. Be careful people. |

Ralph--a house dog User ID: 53212685 United States 07/24/2015 11:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They would, but at a big risk and possible loss of some of the dogs. Too many snakes to turn them loose in such an environment-- too dangerous to risk good dogs like that. They are too small to survive a copperhead bite as some big dogs might. They'd be good to have around the house (I have one!) but not left outside at night or anytime in an unfenced yard. If my property ever gets that overrun, I'm calling in snake exterminators. One thing these guys do that people could copy is make snake traps (selling for $25+ online) Get some pizza boxes or similar size. Tape closed and cut openings for snake to crawl in. Buy at hardware store the extra strong sticky glue that is used in those live rodent traps. Spread it around in bottom of box and put them out for snakes. If you catch a GOOD snake that you want to inhabit your yard, pour vegetable oil around where snake is stuck and it will wriggle free in a few hours. They are fantastic little diggers when they are catching critters but she doesn't dig any other time. |

This is BS ... You don't live in Texas--or you live in an apartment complex. Copperheads are poisonous, and Texas has almost as many of them as rattlesnakes--almost. Big mothers 4 foot long and 4 inches around. Commonplace. Couple gallons of gas down the snake hole is enough to flush 'em out if nothing nearby. Best to burn them out cause they for sure hate that gas and come out nasty. I think it's $50/shot and is a two-shot series, each shot being six months apart. This may not be exactly right -- just going from memory. Never have seen anything worse than a nice sized black snake. This year a small copperhead was right next to a mushroom I was about to pick up. Good thing I always scan the area really well for other shrooms before picking one. I gave it a spyder bite. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 21052952 United States 07/24/2015 12:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've caught and picked up two copperheads on my property. One of the most docile snakes I've ever dealt with. The first one I ever found was laying in a coil when I spotted it. I went to the shed and got a push broom. I waved it in front of the snake and it just looked at me, not the broom like "O.K. Whaddaya want?" No striking, hissing, or any of that. So I gently touched it with the broom and was soon gently pushing it along the gravel! This got me another look of exasperation from the snake. It slowly started off away from me and I put the broom in front of it. The snake paused a moment then began to go over the broom. This is where my really bad idea sprang into my head. Waiting until it was about halfway over the broom I slowly lifted it off the ground and grabbed it's tail. Holding the tail and the broom with one hand and fumbling with my phone to get a pic with the other I realized the snake began to come back down the broom handle toward me and was pulling his tail free from my grasp. Sensing I was losing control of the situation and possibly reaching the end of even this mellow fellow's temperament, I walked to the edge of the property with snake and broom in hand and went to chuck him off the end of the broom. He twirled around the end of the broom like a baton and I lost my nerve and drop the whole thing and bolted. Later I came back and carefully retrieved my broom, no snake to be seen. The second copperhead I cornered and coaxed into an igloo cooler for relocation. Once I got to the power lines, I opened the cooler on it's side and stepped away. I waited and waited. Made a wide circle around to see what it was doing and it was all curled up, just enjoying the inside of the cooler. I went to the back side of it, gave it a couple taps with my toe, threw a small rock at it and finally had to pick it up and dump him out of it. I got the same look I got from the other one, like "Really, dude?" and it sat there for a bit, chose a direction and headed off like I wasn't even there. So I don't buy the story of a copperhead going after anyone unless you stomped on it first. They are very hard to see sometimes. |
