The government made it illegal to hold precious metals and gave fiat currency in exchange. They literally confiscated private hard gold assets from normal citizens. It became illegal to own physical gold. Quoting: The Årtist Not only this, but if you have physical gold coins from that time... guess what, it's the government's. It's still illegal to own gold from the confiscation period. How many homes were visited and the gold taken? That's right, zero. How many Americans got imprisoned for keeping back the evil coins? Once again, zero. It was a voluntary confiscation driven by intimidation. A few months later they re-valued gold from 20 to 35 bucks. In so doing they devaluied the dollars they paid those hard working old farmers and savers for their money. It was a scandalous action taken by the closet communist, FDR. Anonymous Coward User ID: 30344769 United States 08/01/2015 07:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Greek Debt Crisis Adds to a Spike in Burglaries and Robberies Quoting: Anonymous Coward 58886993 JULY 31, 2015 ATHENS — One evening three weeks ago in Kifissia, an affluent garden suburb of Athens, a retired financial adviser and his wife decided to take in one of the delights of summer here, an outdoor movie. They pulled tight the shutters, set the alarm, locked the house and strolled off. Halfway through the movie the alarm company called, and they rushed home to find the alarm immersed in a bucket of water, the shutters jimmied and a safe emptied of jewelry. The speed and sophistication of the crime were astonishing, the financial adviser’s wife said, still feeling vulnerable and not willing to be identified by name. "They knew they had 10 minutes until the police came; they put everything in a pillowcase, and they were gone," she said. At seemingly every dinner gathering in Athens this summer, the conversation turns to tales of break-ins, burglaries and robberies that have accompanied the government debt crisis.
