7 killed, 2 missing in S. Philippine flashflood

At least seven people died and two others were missing after a flashflood occurred Tuesday due to heavy rain in southern Philippine province of Bukidnon, the state disaster agency confirmed Thursday.

The casualties, including four children aged six months to nine years old, drowned in separate occasions, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

Elephant-Size Underwater Blob Mystifies Divers

Divers often swim past bizarre creatures of the deep, but an elephant-size, jellylike blob left a group of them mystified.

The transparent sphere floated about 72 feet (22 meters) below sea level off the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It sparkled like a ball of glitter when the divers shone their flashlights through its surface, but Lutfu Tanriover, an underwater photographer and videographer with Derin Underwater Film, and his co-divers had no idea what it was, according to Deep Sea News.

Woman Loses Vision After Mosquito Bites

A woman who caught chikungunya fever while vacationing in the Caribbean wound up losing some of the vision in her right eye permanently, according to a new report of her case.

The findings suggest that vision problems may be an underreported effect of the mosquito-transmitted virus, which has spread in recent years from Africa and Asia to the Caribbean, Latin America and parts of the United States, the report's authors said.

Gujarat floods: 72 people dead, over 81,000 cattle perished due to heavy rains

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Wednesday said that at least 72 persons have died and over 81,000 cattle have perished in the flood followed by heavy rains in north region of the state last month.

State health minister and government's spokesperson Nitin Patel said government property worth Rs 2,000 crore has been either washed away or completely damaged.

LAKE ELSINORE: Fish die-off continues for a second day

Fish continued to perish in Lake Elsinore for a second day Wednesday, Aug. 5, as a heat wave is exacerbating deteriorating water quality.

City workers scooped out about 400 pounds of carcasses Wednesday, bringing the two-day total to about 1,000 pounds, said Management Analyst Nicole Dailey, who is orchestrating a multi-agency response plan called Lake Watch 2015.

Bird Death Reports Are Up In Homer, Food Sources Possibly To Blame

The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is receiving multiple reports indicating a significant increase in dead and dying birds found on beaches in the Homer area over the last two weeks. The reports are coming from beach walkers and local citizen scientists dedicated to surveying sea bird populations. Leslie Slater is the Gulf of Alaska Unit Biologist for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. She says the number of birds reported is in the dozens.

Dead dolphins again wash up on shores of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast

Summer 2015 is again seeing numbers of dead dolphins washing up on the shore of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastline, with violence suspected as the cause of death in some cases, but as in all previous years, there is no clarity on what causes the phenomenon.

In some cases in previous years, there have been allegations of dolphins being shot or otherwise killed by fishermen protecting their nets.

NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Something's fishy for residents of a Northeast Miami-Dade neighborhood, and the stinky situation has literally ended up near their doorsteps.

According to residents of the Highland Lakes community near Aventura, dozens of dead fish showed up in the water in Sunswept Isles Lake, off Northeast 214th Street, beginning Friday. "I woke up to a stench, and then I look out toward the lake, to my left-hand side, and there were all these white things floating in the distance," said a woman.

Thousands of dead fish in South Branch Whitewater



ELBA, MN — Thousands of brown and rainbow trout, suckers, chubs, dace and other fish were found dead in and near the South Branch Whitewater River Thursday.

They are believed to have died Tuesday, said Vaughn Snook, assistant Department of Natural Resources fisheries supervisor in Lanesboro. "Something happened, we think, on Tuesday morning in the rain," he said.

Iceland: Thousands of mysterious sheep deaths probed

Farmers in Iceland are baffled by the unexplained deaths of thousands of the country's sheep.

About 5,000 sheep died this spring, with the northern and western regions worst affected, and so far experts haven't been able to work out why, Morgunbladid's Iceland Monitor website reports. One theory is that sulphur emitted during a recent volcanic eruption might be to blame, as it could have contaminated vegetation and caused malnutrition in the sheep. The huge eruption at the Holuhraun lava field lasted for six months, and released millions of tonnes of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere.

With 6.7 million bats already dead, scientists believe the fast-spreading disease called White-nose Syndrome could lead to the extinction of some species.

More than six million bats are dead, and millions more are expected to fall victim to a disease known as White-nose Syndrome, or WNS. First identified in the northeastern United States, WNS has wiped out an estimated 95% of Pennsylvania’s bat population and is quickly spreading across the country. It was most recently discovered in Missouri, Delaware and Alabama.

Thousands of birds leave ‘dead zone’ after abandoning Florida Gulf Coast

A 150-acre portion of the Florida Gulf Coast is being described as a “dead zone” by scientists after thousands of birds mysteriously abandoned their typical nesting grounds on the federally protected landscape.

The most surprising is that there isn’t just one species of bird that has disappeared – it is virtually all of them, including blue herons, roseate spoonbills, snowy egrets, pelicans and more, according to a report by the Associated Press. And while some bird families have taken up residence on another island close by, the vast majority is nowhere to be found.

"It's a dead zone now," said biologist Vic Doig of the US Fish and Wildlife Service to the news outlet. "This is where the largest bird colony on the Gulf Coast of Florida used to be."
