FAMILIES on their holidays at a popular beach in England are at risk of being covered in slime and sewage.

A huge hole has opened on the beach and it is erupting like a volcano and sending showers of snails flying everywhere.

The squirming live molluscs, along with carpets of foul-smelling seaweed, are being shot into the air to land on the beach where children paddle and build sandcastles at Orcombe Point, near Exmouth, Devon.

Tourists could even find themselves covered in something far worse - experts fear the ground cave-in is linked to a buried sewage pipe which might split and send human poo spouting over anyone standing too close.

The crater is already more than 6ft wide and at least 10ft deep and although no-one has been hurt so far, East Devon District Council has sealed off the area and said it was investigating.

Alarmingly it's the third time since July that the hole has opened up and a geyser of water has sent snails and weeds shooting into the air.

The first time it happened, the hole was 15ft wide and 15ft deep and the coastguards were called to watch over it till the tide came in and filled it.
