Re: I worked in a maximum security prison in one of the most deadly cities in America...Ask away.
OP,

Thanks for the great thread, truly awesome.

Question:

Do you think we would, as a society, be better served by a prison system that enforces hard labor and shorter sentences?

For instance - we put inmates in jail for 10/15/20 years, but they sit around and go stir crazy, exercise, educate themselves (and learn more about crime in prison as well), etc. Clearly, from your posts, the system does not encourage and facilitate rehabilitation, and is mostly punitive. Yet, is it really punitive?

Wouldn't we be better served by a system with much shorter sentences, but a MUCH harder labor system? I.E., 12 to 18 hour days working and laboring, sleeping, eating and then doing it all over again for say 8 weeks rather then sitting around doing nothing for 5 years?

Do you think that solve some of the problems with our justice system or make it worse?
 Quoting: brokenhalo

It is hard to say if that would be better. Sometimes getting an inmate to get his lazy ass up for something is like pulling teeth. I couldn't imagine how it would be if he had to dig trenches or something. Don't get me wrong though, some of them are really hard workers. I think they take pride in it because 1. they want to impress someone. 2. working hard, getting tired and actually doing something just strictly kills time and when you're locked up, that is all ya' got. Time.

It is defiantly not that punitive because most of them come back! It can't be too bad if coming back isn't a big deal!! I think teaching the ones who want to learn/stay busy is a good idea. Those inmates who want to be cocky, gang bang and be disrespectful 24/7 can keep their asses inside and find ways to kill their time. It is nearly impossible to rehabilitate a human after living in his/her ways for dozens of years. It is like changing the way I would brush my teeth, or dry off after a shower or sit in my car. It is just embedded to me. It would be really hard to fix.

If I was an inmate this is what I would think..."Shorter sentencing, alright...cool. I can work my ass of a little and get back to the streets sooner". Nothing ever beats fast money...I think it would solve some problems for certain inmates, but not all. I am a huge believer regardless of the things you do in prison, if you are put back into the same living environment after you leave prison, you will get right back to what you were doing. Products of their environments.

OP?

if you went to prison, and obviously looks like you were a victim up for attack? could you pay for protection, or would that lead to extortion

guards or prisoners?
 Quoting: Citizenperth

Many of the staff get too personal with the inmates. I have seen many cases where an inmate will say the following to a female staff. "Fuck you bitch, I don't get a fuck". Suddenly another inmate will say something like "Don't talk to her like that man". So, there are staff who are protected by certain inmates maybe because at one point they were in the same gang or a favor once just built trust forever.

As for being an inmate, most of the time you can get anything you need, including protection. Cough up some of your food, clothes, radios and anything that is worth something and you can pretty much get anything in return. Sometimes those 1 on 1 fights will turn into a 1 on 2 really quick. Never know what a month supply of honey buns can get ya'. It can lead to extortion though. It is really common in general with food and snacks and hygiene items. The inmates call it "finessing"

OP?

Q: Can you Buy "Good behavior" Reports.

TO move upward, outward, new location and time served... these REALLY help you..

can these be 'bought'. Not by a full on retard psycho, but someone with money, who wants to speed along their time and situation?

If I went inside, (god forbid)

i'd buy protection and good behavior points.
i'd sell computer knowledge
for extra cash i'd sell investments

Most of the reports come up from the higher up peoples. Administrators and such. I have seen inmates get really close with administrators to the point where it was weird. I have seen some higher up people bring extra soap and food for inmates at times. Also super weird. I have seen inmates beg and manipulate administration staff to get things they want. I am almost positive alcohol and cigarettes were coming from important higher up people.

Not too sure if it could be bought or not. I am sure it can. The admin. staff was kinda' like the government. You never truly know what is going on behind the scenes, but you can tell it is no good.

OP, I just want to thank you for your simply AMAZING thread!!!! I have been on different forums for ages and I don't think I've ever read an entire thread of this length before - the info was excellent and so well told. You really SHOULD write a book on this topic - you can obviously write and you have the stories.

Glad I could explain some things. There are many jobs in this world people don't understand unless they experience it. Just by me using words to tell stories doesn't even cover 10 percent of it.

I enjoy answering questions about the craziness of the place. Some days left me with some serious anxiety, but that was the nature of the place.

OP, as a guard you have a completely unique perspective that the general public never sees. I think you would have an awesome book and an even more awesome MOVIE that would show prison life from a very different point of view. People always feel sorry for the prisoners, it's natural, but we should see things from the guards POV too. And you might have some really practical ideas too to improve the system.

It is too bad writing a book is mainly for personal joy. I felt bad for the inmates at times. I had a guy tell me once he was forced to sell drugs because there was no other option for his 7 brothers and sisters. They either had diaper rash for days or he sold drugs to buy them diapers. Sad life....

how are the older inmates say close to 60 year old treated by other inmates?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69422228

I loved old inmates. They were RARELY a problem. They were quiet and helpful. Most wrote books. I had an old federal guy write a 1300 page book about dragons and castles and stuff. Was crazy.

I had a really really old federal inmate years ago who would walk around with the garbage can and just say; "Garbage garbage, who has garbage. Garbage garbage". I loved that guy, hahaha...

The inmates didn't give the old guys much slack.

I was also a CO for one of roughest prisons in America in Chicago.

Very mean up there.

3 things hit you when you first start working there as a probie; the smell first, the noise and when you hit the block, the intensity of the energy created by endless drama from one faction or another. Incredible energy smacks you in the face that outshines the smell and the noise. Then on other days, it's calm(er.)

Moving 10 inmates from the quad to the education unit is like driving a mobile billboard across Vegas. They communicate with gang signs better than anything. Serious hand signs going the whole time. Ya gotta see it to believe it.

Re: I worked in a maximum security prison in one of the most deadly cities in America...Ask away.
Is requesting a pin against the rules? I'm a noob and don't know the ins and out of this establishment.

Well, for the past few days I have been really thinking about the idea of writing a book (frankly because the thought of working for someone else literally makes me feel ill). I have been researching what it takes, how to do it, how to format it and so on.

I am college educated, extremely level headed, I can write well and for some reason can tell a story in a very simplistic like manner. I always remember struggling to read books throughout my life because the books I chose were hard to understand or I just couldn't relate to the writers. I got sick of seeing words that didn't look familiar. Reading certain books seemed like a chore. Can't people just tell a damn story in simple terms? Whatever. I made it through college without buying books (mainly because I had no money, nor wanted to spend it). I took notes in college classes, actually listened to my professors and researched things on the internet when I needed extra information about a topic.

Very serious question here...If I was to publish a book by the end of the year, could anyone here actually say they would buy it? From lurking around other threads, I know many members aren't too serious on GLP, but a little seriousness would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you stranger friends!
