people aren't rude so much as they are just completely indifferent, they just ignore everyone around them like they don't exist.

People born 1965-1977 are 38-50 years old. Generally speaking, people in that age range do NOT have very young children. Some of those people may indeed have young, bratty children. But, most of the parents you see with young children are going to be younger than 38 years old.

Parenting blogs — and grandparents — echo that shock. A commenter on a recent New York Times’ blog recounted seeing a preschooler purposely trip a woman in a crowded restaurant, and chortle, “‘Mommy, did you see me trip that woman? I tripped her!’” — with no corrective measure from the mother. On Grandparents.com, a mortified grandmother recently asked for advice on how to handle her grandson’s relentless public insulting of his own mother, who apparently seemed unable or unwilling to stand up to the mistreatment.

Many experts say today’s kids are ruder than ever. And it may have something to do with popular parenting movements focusing on self-esteem and the generation that’s embracing them: Generation X, or those born between 1965 and 1977.

On paper, it doesn’t add up. After all, by many accounts Generation X may be the most devoted parents in American history. They are champions of "attachment parenting," the school of child-rearing that calls for a high level of closeness between parents and children, Many Gen-X parents co-sleep with their children, hold them back from entering kindergarten if they feel their children’s emotional maturity is at stake and volunteer at their kids' schools at record rates. Gen-X moms have been famously criticized by early feminists for dropping out of the workforce to care for their young children.

Overuse of cell phones is destroying actual human communication among people of all ages. Nobody feels like talking about it because most people contribute to the problem. It should be considered an addiction/illness epidemic.

It's really quite sad.

Totally agree (while avoiding my family and posting online).

It's just one more product that's oversold and consumed like mad among the uncritical masses and vulnerable young.

I've never really understood texting as a replacement for actual conversation. Sure it's nice to quickly send directions, etc. But it's reductionist, and time consuming, and often dangerous. At least email tends to be non-real time and more about writing out a thought in a complete nuanced sentence, to be replied to in the same manner.

Texting is a step back to the telegraph, basically. Only it's packaged in a hand-held computer and resold as something vogue and wonderful and hip. Useful at time, sure. But what you lose in the inability to hear a voice, with all its inflections and other subtleties of upper primate communication...

Ah, if you're still reading this, I'm preaching to the converted.

parents shouldn't have to teach their kids, to do unto others as they would have them do unto them ... but today's kids are not only hard headed but they are hard hearted as well , they were brought up to believe it is funny when someone hurts themselves ... they have no sympathy for the poor they believe it is their Karma and that they deserve to live in poverty ... they believe that they need money more than the people who EARNED it ... and old people should just give them what ever they want (not need) without lifting a finger to help them - they don't appreciate the experience of a life-time, they believe that they are living in a different world, because their attention span is that of a nat, and they can't communicate, if a sentence takes more than five words, they get lost

I think George Carlin is a little too close to the truth than he knows.

All this obsessive concern for 'the children' really is coming from a bunch of child obsessed pedos. They care so deeply about them because they want to fuck them.

I'm genX and my boy is 17 (disciplined, does chores, doesn't carry a cell phone, shows respect for others, etc). The article should be speaking on genY as the parents because genX was still raised with good ole spankings and punishments for wrong doings which we use while parenting our children.

Our own fight for the West does not begin on the battlefield — it begins with our minds, our wills, and our souls... Ill explain it.
back in the 80's the single mother was praised and told she could do no wrong and it was all the dead beat father's fault.this broke down the family unit,it took the foundation out of the home"the father".With the foundation gone the mother"support, walls to the foundation"became unstable. She went looking for what was missing, she doesn't know how to raise children. No matter how much propaganda about how the mother is the one that raises kids,it's false.Father's are the ones built with the tools to raise kids.Mothers are supposed to be the support to the father.this was broken when they prop'd up the single mother. So during all of that the movies, gov propaganda filled school system, thugs on the streets and such ended up raising the youth of this country, after all back then the father's were labeled dead beat dads no matter how much they tried to be in their kids life. The court system stacked the decks against them.Add to that the spying aspect, when the school system brainwashed the kids to rat on their parents if they even raised their voice.this put power into the hands of untrained youths. They knew not what they were doing when they picked up the phone to report their "abusive parent".Add affirmative action to that list and bus inner city youths into the mix and here we are.....A masterpiece....

I disagree that the farther is the foundation. I think both are equally needed. But, I've seen a lot of lousy, absentee fathers out there. Children can't raise children.

Re: Today's kids may be rudest and most spoiled ever in history
Generally, the people where I live are decent and have manners. But I had a reality check when I went out to SoCal to visit relatives.

I was at a small stationery shop and there was this one girl who kept pushing her way in front of me and then stopping to just chat with her boyfriend. I wouldn't have thought much of it if it happened once (and if the aisles were bigger), but she did it three times in different parts of the store. Never once did she say excuse me or try to move out of the way. She just kept pretending I wasn't even there.

And that's just a mild experience I had.

The first time I was in SoCal several years back I went for a walk in the afternoon. I had a group of kids in a car driving by throw a take-home box filled with pasta at me. It missed... mostly. But I was shocked. I could hear them howling with laughter as they drove down the road.

I've had other experience in SoCal as well. There's nice people there, but there's more assholes there than in any other place I've ever been.

Re: Today's kids may be rudest and most spoiled ever in history
The idea children have it easy and are somehow worse than the adults is just very misinformed. The generation growing up today is put under huge amounts of psychological stress and under all sorts of pressure and being made to feel the weight of the world and growing up in a chaotic world where the future is uncertain and in addition to that being called spoiled and their struggles being dismissed as nothing by the people who are supposed to care about them. This idea kids are spoiled and have it easy and are bad is a form of psychological abuse upon them.

The education system is in on it too.

Both of my sons have told me how unruly children are actually rewarded in their school. One fat kid knows damn well that he simply needs to flip out and roll around a bit to score himself a burger and some attention.

IMO the biggest change is a lack of corporal punishment. Children need a bit of healthy fear to keep them in check, otherwise, they run amok.

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.
