When it happens.... it will happen so fast that there will be nothing left within hours.

I am not worried about a real emergency -- or financial meltdown -- I worry about a nut job like Obama going on national TV and telling everyone to stock up... to create the panic that will clean out stores in a matter of hours.

I would rather be home sitting on my supply of food than in the line of fire at my local grocery store...

Would we really see such "irresponsible" behavior from anyone at that level?

It isn't going to happen here because we aren't England and can't handle it. Those who pay attention will be long home when TSHTF. I went through watching a fight in parking lot over cash only groceries in a ONE STATE SNOWSTORM.

Just returned from the grocery store a bit ago. Vodka was on sale. I don't mean bottom self stuff in a plastic jug. I mean top self Stoli was marked down to $27.33 a fifth. It's usually $32.99. Canned soup was also on sale. The good stuff, Campbell's Chunky varieties were $1.89 a can. Campbell's Chunky is usually $3.29. Eggs are very high, at $3.89 for a dozen jumbos. Lemons were .89 cents each. Hamburger Helper were 3 boxes for $5.

As far a people. Zombied out as usual, eyes to smart phones and kids running around being loud and rude.

On a side note. Whatever happend to people going up the isles keeping carts to the right, and people going down keeping cats to the left. When I was a kid, that used to be a unwritten rule. Now people just plow down the middle, reach right in front of you, almost brushing up against you. And not even a damned 'excuse me' or sorry about that.

We go grocery shopping on a limited basis about once a month. Everything else we grow, raise, or buy from local farmers, particularly the Amish. We also have a growers food market every Saturday morning where mostly we barter and trade. Not too many wide-eyed stunned shoppers around here.

Oh jeez, I went to a store one time in front of a snowstorm and people were just fucking insane. I can't imagine what it would be like if someone said the storm was going to last for a month.

I just got back from the store... I didn't expect a single thing to be out of the ordinary. I made it about 4 isles, and all was well in the world... Until I turned to go down the bottled water isle. WTF?! EVERY SINGLE SHELF EMPTY. I just stood there staring, confused. My husband said, "Looks like someone else in this town reads GLP." LOL! Other than the water isle, everything was business as usual. We are about 30 miles outside of Louisville, KY in a sleepy little town.

I know some companies (Del Monte, Libby, et al) have seasonal "stock up" sales. The canned goods sales used to be on an annual rolling basis by all companies. I'd refresh the larder with tinned vegetables, beans, soups one month; tinned meats & pastas another month; tinned milk & baking goods from September through December. Dry goods like cereals were usually "stock up" in August & September along with "lunch box favourites" like pudding & fruit cups.

Stores in my area _always_ have 25# & 50# short grain & long grain rice on the shelves. 5# & 10# bags of beans, #10 cans and gallon jars, too. It's common to see people with these items in their buggies. Add in those 25# bags of KAF self-rising flour, 5# bags of granulated sugar, 10# bags of cornmeal. LoL there are some serious cooks in these parts!

Now I'm thinking I need to add some dark chocolate and coffee beans this week. Maybe see if anything else interesting pops up as a "Managers Special" in-store. Scored 6#s of candy orange slices for 3-USD over the weekend on a special. No sense facing TEOTWAWKI without a few sweet treats & indulgences.

I buy rice, flour, salt, sugar, beans, and stuff like that at a restaurant supply store and no one even questions it.. I got 100lbs of carrots today for $10... And 50lbs of potatoes for $9...

In Portland, OR. Despite the major news going on in the world? Not one person talked about the sell off today.

I am a worker bee. I work for an indie sandwich shop that has been around for 40 years. Most of our customers are blue collar guys and some white. They were watching Bloomberg (we have it on at work) Friday, but not today. And our diner did more business today than most Monday's. Same thing on the bus ride home. Nobody cares or they don't see the dominos getting ready to fall.
If SHTH in Portland? Portland would be fucked. Just from people who were not prepared. I think this maltdown is going to be a slow killer.

Rice....best food density per gram and beSt logevity if stored correctly.

Plan for proteins,vitamins,water.
Salt....pickling...or any that is not white colur...for minerals.

Keep list of fat neighbors in case things go south and you need meat.

The stores will start reducing inventory of edible items until that magical date arrives then when the looters come there will be nothing to eat. After that when the new plan is put in place they will restock!

Go to the CVS in the ghetto if you need reading material. For some reason that section is never looted.

I noticed the eye contact deal today, too. In fact, when I started chit-chatting with the pharmacy clerk I learned that she is aware that the government is trying to kill us all with GMOs, chemtrails, vaccines, drugs, etc. as well as starve us to death by wrecking the economy.

What else could I do but refer her to GLP? She's probably on here now as a new AC.

As for the increase in stocking up, not so much in rural areas like this. Mostly, they stay pretty well prepared out of necessity and habit.

I saw 5 stockers, that were stupid enough to be spotted by me.
4 were women and one was a man dressed like a woman that would peek around the displays at the end of the isles at me and wink , the last time he raised his skirt and showed me more than I'll ever want to see.

Bachelor in paradise is on nobody gives a rats ass about the stock markets. Went down to the waterfront this afternoon. People are packing in the restaurants. No doom here. People still spending money.
