Re: Death in Appalachia: Obama Crushes the Coal Industry and Leaves Millions of Workers to Lose it All!
By shearing off mountaintops in WV particularly, they were gutting their environment for the sake of greed.

So I don't feel too bad. The whole area is filled with backwater kicks, I mean we're talking REALLY backward, inbred people.

I say clear 'em out and let it return to nature.
 Quoting: KhansWeakerHalfBrother

I agree that coal practices look very ugly. I hate clear cutting the top of mountains. But addressing coal mining practices are nothing compared to destroying one of the largest blue collar industries in American history.

THERE ARE NO OTHER GOOD JOBS IN THESE AREAS. They will all be destroyed before BO leaves office
.
 Quoting: Vituperate Me

I understand about the need to create jobs but we can't have them when the environment is being destroyed. It is horrible in coal mining country. I would rather they be on welfare right now and have free college/trade schools for their kids and/or for themselves.

Natural Gas and some Oil are also found here, and you're seeing a big push to the Nat. Gas side of things. Local governments are scrambling to find ways to produce jobs, mostly through tourism.. which could work to a degree, as these rugged mountains are very beautiful.

Thing is, most people here are quite, keep to themselves, clannish and don't care much for outsiders or opinionated and arrogant assholes like Khans weaker and slightly more retarded Half brother. So I am uncertain how well that will go over for tourism.

People think this is just an Appalachian problem... well, wait til your electric prices go up...again. It's coming.

Remember, under Obama's energy plan, energy prices will necessary have to skyrocket.

That's how these demons operate, whether it is a sector of the economy or country.

Obama drives down coal company stocks, and Soros buys them on the cheap

I predicted in this column last week that the left wasn’t going to kill off the coal industry so much as it was going to steal it. That prediction is already becoming true courtesy of billionaire George Soros.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69630163

Check out stats on US coal exports, the trend that has developed under obama ..... The UMW has basically sold its labor force to mine coal for China. They are even building ports in the U.S. to speed up shipping US coal to China... So if Soros owns the mines and Buffet owns the railroads and China owns the coal, figure it out ... It is cheaper for China to rape our coal mines and build ports in the US ( subsidized by US tax dollars) and ship it to their ports and coastal factories than for them to develop their own inland resources and rail lines to ship their coal to their coasts

Some might even see it as a form of " eminent domain" ( Hillary's unexplained words after her first trip to China as SecState) so the Chinese make sure they get our debt to them repaid in resources if not in dollars

This is simplistic - but a trend I noted in 2011 when people wondered why the .Chesapeake Bay was seeing an unusual number of big ships just anchored out for days ... Turns out they were part of the burgeoning coal exports to China , coming from our eastern mines to our ports to load up for China

Here is another angle to the national and international implications of the US coal industry being destroyed.

Coal plants produce coal ash, which is used in producing cement which is used everywhere.

Look for cement prices to skyrocket in the future as China will basically be the only place to get large quantities of coal ash.

Do you thing BO will try to stop or slow down the Chinese coal industry?

I didn't think so either

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

That is exactly right! This is a money generating scheme with carbon credits based upon the false religion of Climate Change/Global Cooling/ Global Warming/ Global Weirding.. or whatever they're calling it this week.

Look, i've worked and my family has worked in the Reclamation side of the Coal industry, where the State and Fed's have VERY STRINGENT guidelines on how the environment is protected and reclaimed. At any site there are either a State or Federal Mine Inspector there to ensure procedures are followed. Period.
This has nothing to do with the mining of coal.
Furthermore, strip-jobs increase the value of the land because it creates usable FLAT acreage that previously did not exist... and for anyone familar with the area knows flat land sales at a premium.

So, it's a false narrative for anyone to say that this is about the mining environment and/or it destroys the land. Patently false.

Just more Soro's shills helping to drive down the cost so their boss can scoop up some more company stock.

[link to www.salon.com]

Salon is a liberal rag of a website but every once in a while they get it right. Below is a brief excerpt of the chaos and mayhem Obama's anti-coal policies has caused.

Massive and unprecedented bankruptcies are not just a headline in a newspaper. There are millions of lives, families and children that depend on coal as there only viable source of a living wage in Eastern KY, Eastern TN and all of WV.

We have only begun to see the first inkling of the horror show that is to come as nearly all of Appalachia, already one of the poorest parts of the country, loses the majority of its jobs and soul. The only thing left for these hard working people is the government dole for many generations to come.

While Obama gleefully destroys the industrial infrastructure of this planet, China enjoys the legal authority to spew more coal residue in the air in one year than we do in a decade. I guess China and the US live on different planets.

The destruction of the American blue collar worker = 'fundamental transformation' complete.

************

In the first half of this year, at least six domestic coal companies filed for bankruptcy. In February, West Virginia’s Covington Coal fell, followed by Xinergy and Grass Creek Coal in April, Patriot and Birmingham Coal & Coke in May, and A&M Coal in June. In August came the biggest announcement of all: the $10-billion coal giant Alpha Natural Resources had entered the bankruptcy sweepstakes, too.

Only four years earlier, Alpha had secured its position as one of the world’s largest coal outfits by purchasing the Appalachian company Massey Energy for $7 billion and expanding its operations to 60 mines, many in Appalachia. But its reign would prove short-lived. The price of coal has been plummeting as utility companies shift to significantly cheaper shale gas, extracted through the drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to produce power. This April, for the first time since the U.S. Energy Information Administration began collecting data in 1973, gas surpassed coal as the nation’s number one producer of energy.

By late July, the New York Stock Exchange announced that it had suspended trading of Alpha Natural Resources’ stock because it was worth next to nothing.

In August, the inevitable occurred. Alpha submitted a bankruptcy filing which read in part: “The unprecedented changes facing the coal industry run deep and are occurring at a frenetic and unpredictable pace…The U.S. coal industry as currently structured is unsustainable.”

By now, the funeral was underway and the first obituaries were appearing. Headlines in various papers not only announced Alpha’s demise, but offered autopsies for the entire industry. As the New York Times put it in its headline three days after the filing: “King Coal, Long Besieged, Is Deposed by the Market.”

Causes of death: the explosion of cheap natural gas, the rising costs of new environmental and worker safety regulations, and a simple geological reality — the industry has already mined out the majority of all economically recoverable coal.

That wasn't the choice of the miners - who got laid off en masse due to deregulation of how they extracted the coal making it super cheap but an environmental disaster. It's the people who live there who have to deal with the polluted water and ruined landscape and now complete loss of job opportunities.

It was the owners who don't live there that made out like bandits and thanks to Obama there is nothing left for those former miners than welfare and oxycontin.

I thought you were smart enough to know the people were getting fucked and it wasn't their fault. For shit's sake it was the miners strikes that won many of the workers benefits we used to have. Appalachia has always been fucked over by the government. They don't need you as the backing chorus.

PS - Australia is preparing to DOUBLE their coal exports.

There will be a domino effect. Even jobs that aren't coal related, are in fact supported by coal jobs, especially in the coal fields of EKY, EVA and WV, will now be effected by the continued layoffs caused by the Nazi EPA.

Lot's of tax monies flood into those state coffers from coal and the related industries.

And not a word from your type about places like new york where the citizens havent even seen nature, as far as the eye can see covered with concrete and trash and filth.

Whos more destructive to nature? someone who uses a small mountain, or people who cover entire regions with concrete. To see green they have to hop on a subway and travel to the roped off area they call a park, full of trash of course.

worse yet, you people wouldn't survive without those hicks. Calling them inbred just shows how out of touch you are.

This, in my area of WV its only crushing hard working people who are doing their best to provide decent livings for their kin. Now its only gonig to ensure generations of suffering for many who can only find decent wages by going undergound.

WV will survive come hell or high water.
