Maybe he killed or strangled the cats and used the bed linens to wrap them up and dispose of them. Perhaps the animals had feces on them that he got on his hand and he wiped it on the door on the way out.
I hope those poor cats didn't suffer. :(

Even if the police took some things for evidence, it still doesn't make sense. The first week I got into my new house, before the furniture and boxes were actually moved in, looked way more lived in than this place.
