(CNN)A Savannah State University student in Georgia was shot and killed late Thursday in the school's student union building, a spokeswoman said.

Christopher Starks, a junior from metropolitan Atlanta, died at a local hospital after an altercation at the union, according to Loretta Heyward, a spokeswoman for the school.

No arrests have been made, Heyward said.

University police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are handing the case.

This is why you can't have people packing everywhere. Instead of common altercations turning into fist fights, one person will shoot the other (like George Zimmerman/ Trayvon Martin). This isn't Tombstone, Arizona.

Classes just started -- hope we don't have a daily lockdown/shooting.

Moving our two youngest back to the university this week, we gave them each a keychain. It has a light on one end. If the light works, then the stun gun on other end works as well.

They wouldn't take 'em -- the youngest said, "We're guys, mom. We'll just hit them!"

Would be nice if you could count on the other guys to think the same way.

bet only the shooter had a gun, see if everybody knew that everybody else had a gun in their belt, manners would make a comeback like you wouldn't believe

This is what happens when you think fist attacks are acceptable. So if fist attacks are acceptable then gun attacks aren't much different.

College students are supposed to be mature enough to avoid extreme confrontations. They should also be aware that ANYONE might have a weapon. Until more is known, this might be a Darwin moment.

My goal was to point out the terrible coverage. Not only is it a poorly written sentence, but it tries to make a point that isn't even true. The "renewed calls for gun control" are coming directly from the media, and for the press to write it like that, really twists the truth of the statement.

these "altercations" happen way too often at our local majority black college, and at black "music" events.
