Lovely. Our show is next weekend. So how about this whole crashing trend just stops now. I don't want a plane going landing in our warehouse - I can't afford to not be working!

(and since we overlook the airport - I'm not exaggerating about the warehouse! The Thunderbirds will probably deafen us and shake the whole building. YAY!)

WOW...
This guy was well known in the Airshow community.
He flew for "Skytypers", a well.

Here's an article on him, from just yesterday

There was a lady, a wing acrobat who was killed when her pilot crashed during an air show a couple years ago. The high definition photos taken of the plane crashing was bone chilling. Probably because I had met her at an air show a few months before
Her name was Jane. You should see those photos ... Very sad..

I prefer the Blue Angels - but the Thunderbirds are ok. The BA's used to fly so close to my old house, I could see the pilots. And man did they rattle the timbers!

It seems these days that it's not really an air show unless you have at least one crash.

I like the Blue Angels better than the Thunderbirds, as well.

The Marines fly lower, faster, and closer to the crowd, while the AF Thunderbirds show is very regimented, crowd kept back 1/2 a mile, etc.

Now, if you want to see a show that will take your breath away, try the Snowbirds.

Typical carbon fiber failure. Carbon fiber is notorious for sudden catastrophic failure.

Steel and aluminum bend and twist and stretch often long before they fail. But carbon fiber goes all at once.

Re: Crash at NY Air Show
In 2015 America, your safer at the air show then the movie theater.

Air shows are cool, used to live close to a AFB and watch the ThunderBirds and blue angels sitting on the roof of my house.

they would be so low you could literally see the pilot looking at you, it was neat .. are house was about the distance at which they would slow and turn back towards the main show at the AFB. They would do slow turns and group into formations literally over our back yard.

the week that the airshow was in town was really a amazing time,

should have alot more of them, they dont do airshows now after the Clintons closed our AFB

In the video he dove at the ground (probably the runway) I bet he bottomed out of that dive by contacting the runway just hard enough to crack or break the composite fuselage holding the tail.

I went to many airshows in the late 60's early 70's. The more experienced pilots liked to view from some distance away. I asked them why (I was very young), and they said the closer the plane is to the ground the more deadly the error.

Still, loved air shows back in the day.

There was a photo of the plane missing its tail mid-air on this twitter account but the guy pulled it since people started reposting it without permission.

Catastrophic failure, for sure.
Looks like the tail snapped along a stress fracture. Not surprising, considering the forces he puts on it. Probably overlooked it, or pulled to many G's in the maneuver, and over-stressed it.

Carbon-fiber, as designed by Burt Rutan, is 40 years old now, but we still don't know how far we can really go with it.
 Quoting: Flying Elvii

Well in the McLaren factory they test the exact torsional strength of carbon fibre, twisting it until it snaps. Turns out is much stronger than steel in that test. That is fresh modern carbon fibre of course.

Wait a second.....somebody takes a photo of a plane crashing and nobody here is claiming it's part of a vast government plot to kill the pilot who was 3rd cousin to the Doctor that found a cure to cancer but was secretly moved to a base under a mountain where he is to stay with the "victims" of 9/11? Well, let me be the first to say....where is the blood on the ground?.... How do we know the plane really crashed? I have not seen any debris......has anybody interviewed the witnesses to check for crisis actors?....you people are slipping, threads like this are usually full of crap like that.

If anyone had doubts that tails on airplanes were key to flight... what happened to that plane a few seconds after that photo was taken should put those doubts to rest.

Read the article... there was a real American there... hate to lose guys like that.

Modern design-built aerobatic aircraft could "Fly" on horsepower alone, but without the vertical stabilizer, the ailerons alone can't displace enough force to keep the aircraft from spinning with the centrifugal force the engine and propeller creates.
