A crew of four reporters from VICE are being held by Turkey to appear in court today.

They are being accused by Turkey of terrorism associated with Islamic State. Also, they are being accused of collaborating with the Kurdish PKK.

Amnesty International is opposing this accusation from Turkey.

LINK: British citizens Jake Hanrahan and Philip Pendlebury are part of the crew, along with a translator and a fixer. They were reporting on escalating tensions between local authorities and the pro-Kurd Workers’ Party.

The four were reportedly accused by Turkish authorities of having links to the Islamic State group, according to Amnesty International. They were also accused of "close contact with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants," according to Reuters. Their arrest has been condemned by rights groups and watchdogs.

“It is completely proper that journalists should cover this important story. The decision to detain the journalists was wrong, while the allegation of assisting Islamic state is unsubstantiated, outrageous and bizarre,” Andrew Gardner, Turkey researcher for Amnesty International, said in a Friday statement.

I can see why "certain people" might be afraid of allowing rogue reporters into their war.

Amnesty International, PEN International, and the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) have all condemned the detentions.

In a statement, Amnesty International called the allegations put forth by Turkish authorities "bizarre."

A VICE News spokesperson said the journalists will "face unsubstantiated charges of terrorism" when they appear in court on Monday.

"VICE News continues to work vigorously with all relevant authorities to secure the safe release of our four colleagues," the spokesperson said.

Hanrahan and Pendlebury are experienced reporters. Together, they have covered the migrant crisis in Calais, the Scottish independence referendum, republicanism in Ireland, and other stories.

Besides his work for VICE News, Hanrahan has written for the Guardian, the Independent, Wired, and Rolling Stone Middle East. Pendlebury is an accomplished cameraman and editor who has filmed in Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, and other countries.
