These are not migrant workers from Africa, who seek an improved quality of life. The refugees from Muslim nations are running for their lives. Their countries have become a trap of fire and destruction. For many, many years, and not just for a generation, they will remain foreigners.

Professor Arnon Soffer has for years claimed that this tsunami was on the way. Now he claims it's only the beginning and that the real tsunami has not yet arrived. Climate change, poverty, and wars will lead to migration of several million people. The south will stream in masses to the rich north. Africa will in a decade grow from a population of one billion to 1.5 billion. And they have less and less water – 800 lakes have already run dry. They will escape to any possible place.

And what about the Middle East? There, too, says Soffer, the political changes go hand in hand with climate change. The thawing ice in the Himalayan Mountains will accomplish whatever the Taliban does not. Another climate crisis on a continental scale. In Syria, 12 million people are seeking asylum, even now. But those who have arrived in recent months are only the vanguard. Soffer expects millions more to arrive in their wake.


Despite Soffer's predictions, and despite what appears to be a crisis, the numbers are small so far. For now. In July, 107,000 asylum seekers arrived in Europe – triple the number in June 2014, and a record in this era. Once the August figures are tallied, it will break all records. That means an annual average of more than a million people. In the first few months of the year, it was the mass influx from Africa, mainly through the shores of crumbling Libya. The trend has shifted in recent weeks. Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq are at the forefront of the countries exporting refugees.

The enormous stream reveals not only Europe's hesitant face, but also new phenomena. Slovakia announced it would refuse to take in Muslims. Christian? No problem. Two hundred received entry permits. Only 200. What Slovakia officially says, other countries – Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria – are doing in a slightly less blunt manner. They refuse to obey decisions made in Brussels, the European Union's capital, regarding immigration quotas.

Bulgaria does not wish to change its religious balance – eight percent of its population is Muslim – and Poland is emphasizing that it is a Christian nation. Estonia also declared it was a nation "belonging to a Christian culture," and the Czech Republic announced that it would not take in "refugees from a completely different cultural background." These are no longer rioters in an obscure German city, or radical right-wing parties, or Pegida protesters, who oppose Islamization. Now it is also the official policy of some countries.

The EU heads of state understand by now that there is a problem. The Schengen Agreement, which created open borders between the Union's countries, is increasingly violated. Some eastern and central European countries are building border fences. The United Kingdom is preventing the entry of masses of refugees trying to enter via the English Channel. And even those who managed to enter are encountering new legislative initiatives that make the lives of asylum seekers much more difficult.

The new policy means that in contrast to the past, most of the asylum requests from Eritrea are rejected. Military troops are sent to the borders of eastern European and Balkan state to stop the huge inundation – thousands per day. These are borders that were supposed to be erased. The refugees, strangely, are giving new life to the old borders.

Hundreds of angry and frustrated asylum-seekers broke through police lines Monday near Hungary's southern border with Serbia and began marching north toward Budapest, while Britain and France pledged to take in tens of thousands more refugees to try to ease the crisis.

As European leaders debated how to share responsibility for the more than 340,000 people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia who are already seeking refuge, Germany promised to spend billions of euros in extra aid for those already there and those yet to arrive. France weighed whether increased airstrikes against Islamic State militants would help to stem the flow of those fleeing Syria.

But the Hungarian prime minister scoffed at a proposed quota system for refugees in the 28-member European Union, saying it wouldn't work unless Europe first secured its borders.

The migrants, who have swamped every nook and cranny of public space outside the city's Keleti train station, threatened to walk the 105 miles (170 kilometres) to the Austrian border if police don't let them board trains to their desired destinations in Austria and Germany.

"I will walk the whole way if I must," declared 28-year-old Ahmed Shamoun, who deserted Syria's army three months ago, leaving nine brothers and eight sisters behind in Damascus. "I could pay a taxi 500 euros ($550) to take me to Austria, but the police might stop me. I could wait here forever before Hungary lets me take the train."

During her visit to Switzerland on Thursday, Chancellor Angela Merkel told journalists that "Germany is doing what is morally and legally required of it. Nothing more, nothing less," referring to the refugee crisis.

The Chancellor also rejected Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's statements that German migration policy was not strict enough.

Orban called the refugee influx "a German problem rather than a European one," adding that his government had taken all steps possible to comply with European Union regulations in dealing with an ongoing influx of migrants traveling through Hungary.

The Chancellor also urged Hungary to comply with the Geneva Conventions regarding the treatment of war refugees. "These are agreements that all EU member states are obligated to, not just Germany," she said. "This is a problem that concerns us all."

British policy hitherto has been based on the principle that it is better to help refugees from Syria and elsewhere on the spot, rather than encouraging an exodus by granting asylum to large numbers over here. That policy still has much to be said for it. Now, though, Britain will apparently take thousands of refugees directly from their camps. This obviates the need for a perilous journey at the mercy of people-traffickers and the elements, but also creates a new “pull factor” for migrants.

The problem for Cameron, however, is that public opinion in Britain is not ready to accept hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers, even if such an influx were desirable. As long as immigration is running at record levels of between 300,000 and 400,000 a year, with the majority remaining in the crowded south-east and public services already struggling to cope, public attitudes won’t change. Once people realise that their children are competing for school places with the new arrivals, or queues in hospitals get longer and pressure grows on housing, they will blame refugees just as, fairly or unfairly, they blame other immigrants now. What is the solution? The European migration system – Schengen, Dublin and the rest of the regulatory apparatus – is evidently broken beyond repair. The choice is stark. Either we turn the EU into a fortress, while still allowing free movement within its borders, or we allow each country to reach its own accommodation, taking into account economic prosperity, public acceptance and, of course, geography.

The cash-strapped World Food Programme says it has had to drop a third of Syrian refugees from its aid effort in Middle East host countries this year, including more than 200,000 in Jordan who lost aid this month.

More than four million Syrians have fled their country's civil war since 2011, most settling in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.

WFP regional spokeswoman Abeer Etefa said the number of refugees receiving food aid had been cut from 2.1 million to 1.4 million since March.

Ms Etefa said the world must do more to support refugees in their host countries or face increasing migration, adding: "We have to help people where they are or they will move."

Struggling to cope with record numbers of asylum seekers, Germany has told its European partners they too must take in more refugees, as police in Hungary used pepper spray on desperate migrants who broke out of a reception centre at the Serbian border.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking after a weekend in which 20,000 migrants entered Germany from Hungary by train, bus and on foot, described the influx as "breathtaking" and tried to reassure German citizens that the crisis was manageable.

"I am happy that Germany has become a country that many people outside of Germany now associate with hope," she said at a news conference in Berlin.

POPP: No, not at all, and I think the problem is that she was waiting far too long and that her response has been too timid, so far. So, I guess, she was just trying to sit it out. And when it became obvious that this is not a strategy and that this won't work this time and - she started to act. But so far, we cannot see a real solution. I think that's why many people are angry in Germany.

I could see them taking in Syrian Christians but why would you take in a bunch of Muslims who do not have Christian values?

Non Christians will trample their pearls of kindness and turn to rend them.

Over the past two days, thousands of asylum seekers and migrants have embarked on a 100-mile march from Budapest to the Austrian border. They left behind the squalor and uncertainty at Keleti train station to create their own humanitarian corridor through the European Union. They made history.

They walked, heads held high, some carrying children, some only in socks, others on crutches. Kind Hungarians lined the motorway, soon shut down for safety reasons, handing out water, food, and baby strollers. Many refugees told me they loved the Hungarian people but that the government was very bad.

For several days, the Hungarian government had insisted on preventing anyone from reaching the Austrian border, cancelling trains to Western European destinations, in an almost bizarre defense of EU rules; the Dublin Regulations require the first country that asylum seekers enter to take responsibility and prevent them from traveling onward.

Late last night, while some refugees lay beside the motorway to sleep, the government relented and sent buses to pick up the marchers and some others still at Keleti station and take them to the Austrian border. Austria is allowing all those who reach the border to cross, and many have continued their journey to Germany. In both countries, people have shown extraordinary solidarity, welcoming the weary with blankets, provisions, and toys. And the Red Cross, stationed at the Austrian side of the border, made sure that people had a first night of decent sleep in a proper bed in days or even weeks.
